Francis J. “Gus” Dudlek

Francis J. “Gus” Dudlek, age 92, of Delaware City, DE, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 10, 2026.
Born in Philadelphia, PA on May 19, 1934, he was a son of the late Alice (Hartman) Murtha. Francis excelled in athletics during his school years, particularly in basketball and baseball.
On November 21, 1959, Francis married the love of his life, Helen Marie Cressman. Together, they raised four sons. In 1971, Francis and Helen moved their family to Delaware City, Delaware, where they made their home and became active members of the community.
Francis was a proud local union Teamster and worked as a truck driver for more than 40 years. He loved being on the road, meeting people along the way, striking up conversations, and making friends wherever his travels took him. His dedication to his fellow workers extended beyond his work as a driver. He served as a union officer and shop steward, where he took great pride in negotiating contracts, addressing grievances, and advocating for employees’ rights and better working conditions.
Francis also had a deep interest in state and local politics and believed strongly in being involved in his community. Over the years, he worked on numerous political campaigns, volunteered at the polls, and supported many local Democratic candidates and elected officials. He enjoyed meeting people, talking about the issues that mattered to his community, and doing his part to encourage civic participation. His involvement in local politics was another reflection of his lifelong commitment to serving others and staying actively engaged in the community he called home.
Above all, Francis treasured his family. He took great joy in traveling with his wife, Helen, and their friends, and he especially enjoyed helping Helen host Sunday dinners and keeping cherished family traditions alive. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and beloved friend.
Those who knew Francis will remember his quick wit, wonderful sense of humor, and ornery streak along with his great love of dancing and music. He loved to talk with people, make them laugh, lend a helping hand, and give back to his community. Following his retirement, Francis continued to serve others by delivering Meals on Wheels to local seniors. He also maintained an active and healthy lifestyle, walking every day—even during his final days.
A lifelong Philadelphia Eagles fan, Francis spent many Sundays cheering on his team alongside family and friends.
Francis was a faithful member of St. Paul’s Roman Catholic Church, Delaware City, for 55 years. He was also a lifetime member of the Delaware City Lions Club, where he held various offices, and served for many terms as an elected official of the Dragon Run Park Commission.
In addition to his mother, Francis was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Helen Marie (Cressman) Dudlek; and his siblings Delores McMorris, Patricia Murtha, and James Murtha. He is survived by his sons Joseph (Colleen), George (Sue Ellen), Michael (Gina), and Henry “Harry” (Holli) all residing in Delaware; 12 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; and many extended family members and friends who will cherish his memory.
A visitation for family and friends will be held from 8:30 am until 10 am on Thursday, September 17, 2026, at St. Paul Parish, 209 Washington Street, Delaware City, DE 19706, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 am. Interment will follow in St. Paul’s New Catholic Cemetery, 743 Cox Neck Road, New Castle, DE.

Wanted to send my condolences to his family and friends. I just met Gus a few weeks ago but he was a breath of fresh air. Its hard to believe how much he touched my heart and soul in such a short time. I told my friends and family he was my new best friend and i meant every word of it. The stories he told were amazing. We listened to music and he told of the artist he saw. I know he is dancing with his wife right now. I will cherish every day we hung out. You will be missed. Thank you for everything.

I grew up with George and spent countless hours at the Dudlek house.
I was always treated like part of the family. I have many fond memories.
One in particular was Mr. Dudlek teaching me how to swim when I was young in their pool.
He threw me in the deep end!

Our sincere and deep condolences on Gus’ passing. I would bet he is stirring things up in Heaven, has a lot of friends laughing but most important he and Helen are dancing and so happy to be together once again. He lived a very proud life, accomplished much in a quiet way and along with Helen raised four amazing sons. Reading some of his Union accomplishments, I can see where Harry got his service to others.
