George Sakers Dougherty, age 57, of Newark, DE, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, Friday, May 12, 2023 after a 6.5 year battle with cancer.

Born in Wilmington, DE on February 6, 1966, he was the son of Betty L. (Burris) Beaumont and the late Willard “Woody” J. Dougherty, Sr. George graduated from Elkton High School and after High School George worked as a 7-UP Delivery Man where he met his now wife of 33 years. Most of his career, 28 years, he worked at Rogers Corporation formerly Arlon.

George was an avid classic car buff and enjoyed attending car shows every weekend. Over his lifetime he had rebuilt two 1965 Chevy Impala convertibles which he took great pride in and loved cruising in. He cherished his Tuesday evening date night at the movies with his wife, Stacey, where he indulged in his favorite treats; popcorn with extra, EXTRA butter and Slurppees. For several years, George participated in bowling leagues, a passion he learned from his father and uncles, that he later shared with his son.

George loved his family and looked forward to family picnics such as the Annual Family Reunion Crab Feast. He always enjoyed a visit to the beach especially with his family and siblings. George also enjoyed model trains, a hobby he started as a child and continued into his adult years.  Every Christmas setting up a large model train display with his & his children’s train collection. George’s greatest joy was the birth of his granddaughter, Ivy. She was the little sparkle to brighten his life and kept him going toward the end.

George will be remembered as a kind hearted, hot headed, goofball who could make a friend out of anyone he met. The only exception being if you were in front of him on the roadway.

(Sayne) Dougherty; children, George Dougherty II (Ashleigh), Katie Johnson (Erik), and Brittany Dougherty (Alex); mother, Betty Beaumont; siblings, Willard “Jay” Dougherty (Krissy), William “Willis” Dougherty (Lisa), Christina “Tina” Littleton (Sherman), Thomas Heath (Michele) and Charlotte Heath; granddaughter, Ivy Johnson; father-in-law, Lee Sayne, brother-in-law Rob Sayne and many other close relatives and friends.
