George W. Rogers

December 20, 1941 - January 1, 2020

          George W. Rogers, age 78, of Middletown, DE, and formerly of New Jersey, passed away on Wednesday, January 1, 2020.

          Born in Pinewald, NJ on December 20, 1941, he was the son of the late George W. and Stella “Gail” J. (Shade) Rogers, Sr.  George started his first job as a caddy at 11 years old and after graduation from high school he worked as a salesman, construction worker, milkman and finally retiring after 35 years in 1998 as a technician with Sears in Pennsauken, NJ.

          He volunteered for Gibbsboro Fire Company, Station #1 as a firefighter and later as the towns’ Emergency Management Coordinator and Safety Committee chairman.  George’s commitment continued with many hours at the pancake breakfasts and the boroughs Fourth of July hotdog cooking.  He was a life member of the NJ State Fireman’s Association.  George loved cruises, time spent at their shore home and especially the hot air balloon ride that he and Judy took before moving to their dream home in Delaware.  A true family man, he helped Judy take care of her parents and aunt before they passed away.

          In addition to his parents, George was preceded in death by his first wife, Colleen (McGavin) Rogers in 1986; beloved second wife, Judy A. (Large) Rogers in 2016; and son-in-law, James Smith.  He is survived by his children, Stella Padilla (Andy), George Rogers III, Janet Rogers and Karen Noble (Chuck); step-children, David Fries, Alda Buckingham and Edward Fries IV (Tracy); and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.

          A visitation for family and friends will be held from 1 pm until 2 pm on Friday, January 17, 2020, at Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 275 East Main Street, Middletown, DE, where a funeral service will begin at 2 pm.  Interment will be held privately.

          In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in George’s memory to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.

  • Stella, I am so very sorry for the loss of your beloved father. I don’t know if you remember me. I worked with your beautiful mother at Kennedy Hospital, Stratford on 2 East. I met your dad a few times and I remember him as a very kind and gentle man. You worked with my sister Pat and the 2 of you were friends. I don’t know if you know but Pat died on April 10, 2016 just a few weeks after our mother died.
    Please know that I will keep you and your family in my prayers.
