Mr. H. Dexter Miller, Jr., age 54, of Elkton, MD, passed away suddenly on Sunday, November 4, 2012.
A native Delawarean, Mr. Miller was born in Wilmington on December 2, 1957, son of the late H. Dexter Miller, Sr. and Edith Barbara Miller. For over 40 years, he was a commercial and industrial concrete contractor. As the co-founder of Mumford & Miller and the current owner of Samco, Inc., he was greatly admired throughout his life for his excellent work ethic and unwavering commitment to a job well done. He also generously shared his time as a coach for youth soccer and Little League baseball. In both his professional and personal life, Mr. Miller served as a mentor.
Mr. Miller enjoyed boating, vacationing and fishing in the Florida Keys, the Caribbean, and Mexico, and dancing. Most of all, he will be remembered as a devoted husband and father whose happiest times were spent in the company of his beloved family.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 27 years, Susan C. Schaffer Miller; children, Samantha A. Miller and H. Dexter Miller III; brother, John S. Miller; sister, Kathy A. Williams (Derek); stepmother, Jean Miller; stepfather, Richard Gantly; mother-in-law, Patricia Schaffer; favorite aunt and uncle, Juanita and Michael Downs; stepbrother, Ryan Dashiell; stepsisters, Kim and Shelly Thompson; sisters-in-law, Cheryl Dohorty (Glen) and Jennifer Heinlein (Mark); brother-in-law, James Schaffer, Jr. (Patty); many cousins, nieces, nephews, and extended family members; his best friend, brother, and former business partner, Richard Mumford (Bernadette); and his beloved dog, Gracie.
Visitation will be held beginning at 10 am on Saturday, November 10th, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle. The funeral service will follow at 12 noon. Interment will be in Hickory Grove Cemetery, Port Penn Road, Port Penn.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Mr. Miller may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Port Penn, P.O. Box 177, Port Penn, DE 19731.
