Mr. Harold B. Prettyman, Jr., age 86, of Newark, DE, passed away on Thursday, November 24, 2011.
A native Delawarean, Mr. Prettyman was born in Delaware City on February 26, 1925, son of the late Harold B. Prettyman, Sr. and Mary Laura Downes Prettyman. He was a graduate of Delaware City High School, where he was a gifted athlete and letterman and was elected senior class president. Following high school, he proudly served his country in the US Army during World War II. In civilian life, he made his career in professional sales with the former Rittenhouse Motor Company, where he retired in 1991 after 41 years.
Mr. Prettyman was a longtime member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church. He had also been a member of Christ Church in Delaware City and served on the parish vestry for many years. He greatly enjoyed traveling, especially airplane trips, and, with his wife, visited most of the United States, Canada, and many islands in the Caribbean. An avid and talented fisherman, he was once honored by the State of Delaware for landing a record-breaking, champion weakfish.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 59 years, Doris Marie Ferguson Prettyman, a granddaughter, Laura Lee Hoover, and five siblings. He is survived by his daughter, Connie Lee Prettyman of Newark; son, Harold B. Prettyman III and his wife, Ruthann of Newark; brother, William H. Prettyman of Smyrna; sister, Janice Nelson of Newark; and grandchildren, Harold Benjamin Prettyman IV and Julieann Prettyman.
Visitation will be held from 6 pm to 8 pm on Tuesday, November 29, 2011, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 121 W. Park Place, Newark. A funeral service will be held at 10 am on Wednesday, November 30, 2011, at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 276 S. College Avenue at Park Place, Newark. Interment will follow in Head of Christiana Cemetery, Nottingham Road, Newark.
