Harvey L. Hirst, Jr.

July 25, 1927 - July 23, 2019

          Harvey L. Hirst, Jr., age 91, of Landenberg, PA, passed away at home on Tuesday, July 23, 2019.

          Born in Riverton, NJ on July 25, 1927, he was the youngest of five children to the late Harvey L. and Clara (Burris) Hirst.  Harvey graduated from University of Delaware, captaining the golf team during his tenure.  He was dedicated to his career with Turner Construction Company, retiring in 1992 as Vice-President and Operations Manager.  He worked up and down the East Coast in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Washington DC and Connecticut.

          A true family man, Harvey loved the summers with his wife and children at the Jersey Shore, enjoying a martini and a cigar.  He liked his time spent in his work shop and his tinkering with his model trains.  An avid Eagles fan, Harvey was thrilled when they won Superbowl LII. 

          In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Alice J. Hirst; siblings, Marion H. Pritchard, Walter Hirst, Mildred H. Elwell and Edward Hirst.  Harvey is survived by his children, Harvey L. Hirst III (Traci) and Martha Hirst Schiebel (George); and grandchildren, Timothy Hirst, Trevor Hirst, Andrew Schiebel and Carolyne Schiebel.

          A visitation for family and friends will be held from 9:30 am until 10:30 am on Saturday, August 3, 2019, at Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 121 West Park Place, Newark, DE, where a funeral service will begin at 10:30 am.  Interment will follow in Silverbrook Cemetery, 3300 Lancaster Avenue, Wilmington, DE.

          In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Harvey’s memory to the LaMancha Animal Rescue, PO Box 656, Unionville, PA 19375 or the Wilmington & Western Railroad, PO Box 5787, Wilmington, DE 19808.

  • I have the fondest memory of Harvey and our sharing of Dutch (the dog). He was so kind to have Dutch in his office all day until I came home from work. I will miss you Harvey!
