Henry L. Read, age 93, of New Castle, DE, passed away on Friday, July 24, 2026.

Born in Wilmington, DE on August 31, 1932, he was a son of the late Elmer and Mary (Russell) Read. Henry proudly served in the United States Army. He made his career as a truck driver for Teamsters Union, retiring after 42 years of service.

Henry enjoyed being a member of the American Legion as well as the Disabled American Veterans. He was also a member of the 2nd Infantry Division Korean War Veterans. In his spare time, Henry could often be found painting or woodworking. He loved spending countless hours on the water fishing and boating.

In addition to his parents, Henry was preceded in death by his children, Robert Read and JoAnn Gentner; and granddaughter, Sierra Mercado. He is survived by his wife, Annette Read; children, Barbara Mergenthaler of Bear and Michael Read (Roberta) of New Castle; stepchildren, Christina Smith (Andrew), Luis Mercado (April), Christopher Mercado, Roman Mercado, Edward Mercado (Lori), and Daniel Mercado; 26 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.

A visitation for family and friends will be held from 12 pm until 1 pm on Thursday, July 30, 2026, at Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 North DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE, where a funeral service will begin at 1 pm. Entombment will follow in Gracelawn Memorial Park, 2220 North DuPont Highway, New Castle, DE.
