Horace F. “Jake” Levering

August 13, 1933 - May 5, 2025

Horace F. “Jake” Levering, age 91, of New Castle, DE and Cape May Court House, NJ passed away on Monday, May 5, 2025 surrounded by his family. Born in Wilmington, DE, on August 13, 1933, he is the son of the late Horace A. and Sallie (Foster) Levering. Jake met the love of his life, Eleanor Lipinski, at a lodge dance when he was just 18. After dating for two years, they married and that marriage lasted 67 years.  When Jake was drafted into the Army, he served in Germany. Eleanor and his baby daughter, Linda, joined him in Germany for two years. After moving back to the states, sons Ken and John joined their family. He made his career as a security guard at the Chrysler plant in Newark.

Jake loved spending his free time in nature, going fishing and camping. He and Eleanor also loved square dancing. An avid Philadelphia sports fan, he could often be found cheering on the Phillies and Eagles. For over 35 years he and Eleanor spent six months in NJ at their condominium campground and then wintered in Florida. They went on numerous cruises. He enjoyed spending time with his family.

In addition to his parents, Jake was preceded in death by his wife, Eleanor (Lipinski) Levering; son, John L. Levering; siblings, Donald Levering and Doris Pavlik; and son-in-law, Joe Briggs. He is survived by his children, Linda A. Briggs and Kenneth H. Levering (Denise); grandchildren, Stacey Malm, Christopher Briggs, Amanda Levering, Justin Levering, and Michelle Briggs; and 10 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his nieces, Sallie Lee Midash and Ellen Hahn.

A visitation for family and friends will be held from 10:30 am until 11:30 am on Thursday, May 15, 2025, at Asbury United Methodist Church, 300 East Basin Road, New Castle, DE, where a memorial service will begin at 11:30 am. Inurnment will follow in Gracelawn Memorial Park, 2220 North DuPont Highway, New Castle, DE.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jake’s memory to Howard Weston Senior Center, 1 Bassett Avenue, New Castle, DE 19720.
