Ilse K. Sweetman - Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Homes & Crematory

Ilse K. Sweetman

Ilse K. Sweetman, age 82, of Newark, DE, passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her loving family on Thursday, December 11, 2025.

Born and raised in Schwabenrod, Germany, she spent the first twenty years of her life before embarking on an extraordinary journey that would take her across the world. Ilse met her first husband while he was stationed in Germany serving in the Air Force, and the two married in October of 1963. Shortly afterward, she moved to the United States, arriving with no English but an immense determination. By New Year’s, through countless books and her own perseverance, she had taught herself the language.

Before coming to the United States, Ilse worked for a master dressmaker in high-end fashion, creating patterns inspired by Parisian designers. She modeled clothing for American buyers, appeared in German clothing catalogs, and even walked the runway in a fashion show. Her remarkable talent extended into her personal life—she created many of her own beautiful garments, including her wedding gown and her children’s clothing.

Ilse embraced her new home while remaining deeply connected to her heritage. She was a proud member of the Delaware Saengerbund and an enthusiastic participant in local bowling leagues, where she won numerous trophies. She cherished time at the beach with her children and grandchildren, especially in the Outer Banks, and she loved returning to Germany to visit family and reconnect with her roots.

Her love of nature was evident in her flourishing gardens. She tended cherry and pear trees, grew delicious tomatoes and cucumbers, and created many vibrant flower gardens. Ilse delighted in feeding the birds and squirrels and always had a deep affection for her dogs; Fritzie, Jackie, Pumpkin, Nicholas and Sweet Pea.

Above all, Ilse was devoted to her family. She enjoyed caring for her grandchildren when they were young. Her legacy lives on in the many lives she touched and the beauty she brought into the world.

Ilse was preceded in death by her loving husband of 34 years, Walter Peters “Pete” Sweetman, Jr. and her parents, Fritz and Berta Kühntopf. She is survived by her children, John N. Cox, Jr. (Tina), Christina N. Bonner, and James A. Cox; stepsons, Walter Sweetman III (Stephanie) and Brian Sweetman (Tammy); sister, Brigitte (Jürgen) of Germany; grandchildren, David Cox (Amber), Heather Cox (Robert), Colin Bonner, Carissa Bonner, and Riley Cox; 2 great granddaughters, Sophia and Bella Cox; and Karla Kyritsis, who was a like a second daughter to her.

Services will be held privately.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Ilse’s memory to Faithful Friends, 165 Airport Road, New Castle, DE 19720 or online by clicking here.
