Irene L. Ballance, age 90, of New Castle, DE, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, on Sunday, October 6, 2024.

Born in Wilmington, DE, on May 18, 1934, she was a daughter of the late Michael and Stella (Skonieczna) Lehowit. Irene was a graduate of Wilmington High School. She proudly served in the United States Army during the Korean War as a sergeant and was a secretary to General Omar Bradley.

Irene loved to watch sports and never missed an Eagles or Phillies game. She also enjoyed bowling in her spare time. Most of all, she loved being with her family.

In addition to her parents, Irene was preceded in death by her loving husband, Linden F. Ballance, Sr.; children, Daniel L. Ballance and Thomas M. Ballance; and siblings, Raymond Lehowit and Lillian McMichael. She is survived by her children, Richard T. Ballance (Mary), Linden F. Ballance, Jr. (Sandy), Joanne B. Scatasti (Joseph), Kathleen J. Michaels (Ron), and Jeffrey J. Ballance; sister, Carol Parsons; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

The Ballance family would like to extend a special thank you to Compassionate Care Hospice for the exceptional care they provided to Irene.

All services will be held privately.

  • So very sorry for your loss. Thoughts and prayers are with Irene’s family . I was one of the therapists who took care of her in her home many years ago from St. Francis.
