James Andrew Downey

James Andrew Downey, age 87, of Newark, DE, passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 2, 2017.
Born in Delaware County, PA on March 20, 1930, James was the son of the late John W. and Marcella (Diehl) Downey. He proudly served his country as a member of the U.S. Army during the Korean War. James worked as a pipefitter, retiring after many years of dedicated employment, with Allied Chemical.
He adored animals of all kinds, and shared a special bond with his 4-legged buddy, Kona. James looked forward to catching up with friends at the Glass Kitchen and his monthly trips to Delaware Park. He was a beloved father, brother, and grandfather and will be dearly missed.
James is survived by his daughters, Kimberly Dufford (Joseph) and Kathy Raughley (David); brother, Leo Downey; sister, Marcella Toner; and grandchildren, Samuel and Eliza Dufford and Shane Raughley.
A visitation for family and friends will be held from 10:30 am until 12:00 Noon on Wednesday, November 8, 2017, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 121 West Park Place, Newark, DE. A committal service and interment with military honors will follow at 1:00 pm in the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear, DE.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), 455 Stanton-Christiana Road, Newark, DE 19713.
