James C. “Jim” West, Sr.

March 14, 1939 - January 14, 2021

James C. “Jim” West, Sr., age 81, of Newark, DE, formerly of Wilmington, DE, passed away suddenly on Thursday, January 14, 2021.

Born on March 14, 1939, he was the only son of the late Cornelius H. and Audrey T. (Shackel) West. Jim graduated from Wilmington High School in 1956. He was drafted into the U.S. Army, serving from 1961 to 1962, as a medic. After being discharged from the military, Jim dedicated 37 years as a lab technician for the DuPont company in Chestnut Run facility, where he tested textiles and tires. Before retiring in 1997, he also worked on medical imaging projects. Jim was a good listener, enjoyed eating out with friends and family, and attending car shows. He watched baseball as well as football, and was always rooting for the Philadelphia Eagles and Philadelphia Phillies.

In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by his loving wife of 42 years, Elizabeth (Vaughan) “Liz” West. He is survived by his children, Susan E. West of Newark, Kathryn A. West of Christiana, Jacqueline C. Haftl (Stephen) of Middletown and James C. West, Jr. (Jenifer) of Frederick, MD; sister, Barbara A. West of Elsmere; grandchildren, Teresa, David and Jonathan Haftl, and Veronica and Zoe West; and 2 great grandchildren.

A visitation for family and friends will be held from 10 am until 11:30 am on Thursday, January 21, 2021, at Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 121 West Park Place, Newark, DE. Face masks will be required for all in attendance. Services and interment will be held privately.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jim’s memory to Meals on Wheels, 100 West 10th Street, Suite 207, Wilmington, DE 19801 or Newark United Methodist Church – Food Cupboard Program, 69 East Main Street, Newark, DE 19711 or the American Diabetes Association, P.O.   • Beautiful done video,made me cry, the wests were our neighbors in newark, our kids grew up together,both of us has 3 girls,1 boy.jim was always a calming spirit,guiet and so polite.i always admired how his family spent time together. May he rest in peace.may your memories help you all thru this hard time.GOD BLESS YOU

  • He will always be remembered he was the best neighbor growing up. I Loved visiting my best friend Jackie as a child and their house always spelled like delicious food. I loved when they invited me to eat . I spent the night a few times and realized this was a very loving home. The love Jim and his wife had for their 4 kids was something only seen in fairly tales .. I was blessed to know him and his family as I grew up.
