James D. Stewart (Jim)
May 7, 1942 - March 18, 2026
James D. Stewart, (Jim) age 83, of Middletown, DE, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family on Wednesday, March 18, 2026.
Born in Marshallton, DE on May 7, 1942, he was a son of the late Edward D. and Anna H. (Blunt) Stewart. James proudly served in the United States Navy during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He made his career as an elite carpenter and owner of Kitchens Plus, Inc. in Middletown.
Deep in his faith, Jim was an active member of St. Georges United Methodist Church. He found joyful peace by spending his free time fishing and traveling with his wife, Jane and whomever else could join them. As a couple, Jim and Jane were known for their love of music, the jitterbug and watching their favorite baseball team, the Philadelphia ‘Sillies.’ A car enthusiast, driving his award winning 1958 Chevy always put a smile on his face. Jim will always be remembered as a hard worker who devoted his life to provide a happy home for his family. The farmhouse and land he restored was considered a safe landing place for friends and family as all were welcome. His energetic disposition will always be remembered and will never be matched.
In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by his wife, E. Jane (Hensley) Stewart; 4 brothers; and 3 sisters. He is survived by his children, Robert B. Stewart (Paige) of Middletown, Donna L. Perry (James) of Smyrna, and Sharon L. Long (Richard) of Wilmington; sister, Carol L. Riggs of Elkton, MD; life-long friend Eddie Allen of Townsend, DE: 10 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great-grandchildren.
A visitation for family and friends will be held from 10 am until 12 pm on Saturday, March 28, 2026, at Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 275 East Main Street, Middletown, DE, where a funeral service will begin at 12 pm. Interment will be held privately in Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery.

Uncle Jimmy was amazing, as a child some of my best memories came from spending Christmas at his house with Aunt Jane. He was always happy and fun, especially looking at his “project cars” He will truly be missed.

I was deeply saddened to hear of Jim’s passing. I worked with him at Garrett Miller for 13 years. He always had a kind word and you could always count on him to do a great job. He and George were quite a pair. I am proud to have known him and could call him a good friend. My best to his family.

The last patriarch of my childhood has passed and I have been too sad to say anything until now ..
My Uncle Jimmy was a true angel on earth and I was so lucky to have him as part of the village that raised me . He embodied the words “family man.”
He was a slow and steady strength. He loved you unconditionally and you felt safe in that . He could disagree with your life choices and never make you feel less than for it .
He was a Christian man not in words but in his life and the way he lived it. His actions spoke louder than any words. I never wanted to disappoint him , not because he would lay in judgement but because he was such a good soul that it made you want to be a better person .
He built an entire home with his hands and skill ,that felt like home to anyone who passed the threshold . It didn’t matter how you fit into his puzzle of family and friends , you always belonged and you were always welcome. There are too many of us to count , from all different generations , that will hold that feeling we got when we were at “the farm” very close in our hearts.
Oh and his smile! He always told me he loved my laugh. On his trip to Kansas he told me that just hearing my laugh was worth the whole trip. But his smile, even on our last visit, made my whole trip worth it and I knew exactly what he meant when he said it about me . He smiled from his heart. His kind and loving and huge heart. And it was absolutely magnetic.
A man like him could never be replicated. This world has suffered a great loss. But heaven .. oh what a reunion! My only consolation is that his body is no longer broken, he is whole again, and with all the greats of my family.. preparing a home for the rest of us 🩷

I am so sorry to hear of Jim’s passing. I will always remember your dad telling me about the goat the first time I met the family. That goat was scary. I was happy to meet Alan’s whole family. Alan and I are keeping you in our prayers.
Until that big reunion, Rest in Peace Jim.

It is with a heavy heart that I am writing this. Jimmy and the Stewart family were and are wonderful people. Growing up with Jimmy and his family helped make life special, rewarding, and full of laughter and fun. The times spent camping and talking about cars will always be remembered. He was a good man.
