James H. Sherman - Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Homes & Crematory

James H. Sherman

James H. Sherman, age 90, of New Castle, DE, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 22, 2025.

He was the son of the late Paul H. Sherman and Margaret Elizabeth (Richardson) Budinger.

Jim retired after 42 years with DuPont, where he worked as a lab technician, and was also part owner of the Citgo gas station. A lifelong lover of sports and community, he found joy in coaching baseball, golfing, and gardening. During his high school years, Jim excelled as an All-State football player and also played basketball and baseball.

He was a proud member of Stahl Post #30 in New Castle, St. Anthony’s Club, St. Gabriel’s, and DuPont Country Club. In recognition of his years of dedicated coaching for American Legion Stahl Post 30, Wilmington University’s Stahl Post #30 field is named in his honor as Jim Sherman Field.

In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by his son, Paul H. Sherman, and his sister, Sandra “Sandy” Sherman Malinowski.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 73 years, Claire Drendall Sherman; five children: Margaret “Kay” Schorah (Steve), Claire Wilson (Kevin), Kimberly Boone (Ricky), Leslie Williams (Len), and James Sherman (Lisa); fourteen grandchildren: Lauren, Brie, Serena, Alison, Bryan, Cassey, Emily, Jennie, Kyle, Lenny, Michael, Christopher, Cody, and Matthew; twenty-three great-grandchildren: Chelsea, Kayley, Ava, Maria, Savion, Olivier, Roe, Sophie, Chase, Reid, Madelyn, Max, Rowan, Evan, Paytahn, Kye, Rylen, Camden, Dreyven, Ozzden, Madison, Maci, and Austin; and five great-great-grandchildren: Dakota, Colby, Easton, Walker, and Keaton.

All services will be held privately.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you honor Jim’s memory by spending time with your loved ones or enjoying a peaceful moment outdoors—just as he would have wanted.
