James Leonard “Jim” Katurakes

James Leonard “Jim” Katurakes, age 91, of New Castle, DE, passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 9, 2018.

Born in Wilmington, DE, on January 19, 1927, he was the son of the late James and Rozalie (Andrikis) Katurakes, Sr. Jim joined the US Navy after high school and was stationed at Okinawa when WWII ended. After the war, he began a career at the Wilmington News Journal as a linotype machinist and retired after 37 years.

In his retirement years both he and his wife Norma generously volunteered at the St. Anthony’s Italian festival, the Emmanuel Dining Room and Our Lady of Fatima R. C. Church. Jim was an excellent cook and loved preparing delicious meals for his family while entertaining everyone with his humor. Jim was known for his great crab cakes. He enjoyed gardening, the beach, fishing and crabbing. Jim was a longtime member of Our Lady of Fatima serving as a Eucharistic Minister and was a past 4th Degree Grand Knight of the parish’s Knights of Columbus Council No. 11469 from 2002 – 2004. Jim’s strong Catholic faith inspired him to serve the church and community in any way possible.

In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Norma D. Katurakes; son, Mark A. Katurakes; brother, Albert Katurakes; and sister, Valera Smith. He is survived by his daughters, Lisa Yourison (Thomas) of Mullica Hill, NJ and Nora C. Katurakes of Newark; son, James L. Katurakes III of Orlando, FL; grandchildren, James Nathaniel Katurakes, Lauren Katurakes, Kevin Yourison (Lindsey) and ThomasYourison, Jr. (Michelle); and great grandchildren, John, Sarah and Daniel Yourison.

A visitation for family and friends will be held from 9:30 am until 11 am on Tuesday, August 21, 2018, at Our Lady of Fatima R.C. Church, 801 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE 19720, where a Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 11 am. Interment will be held at 1 pm on Tuesday, August 21, 2018 at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear, DE.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jim’s memory to Our Lady of Fatima R.C. Church at the address listed above.
