Jane V. Thornton

April 14, 1932 - May 10, 2024

Jane V. Thornton, age 92, of Newark, DE, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family on Friday, May 10, 2024.

Born in Elkton, MD on April 14, 1932, she was a daughter of the late Joseph W. and Ellen (Norris) Savin. After raising three children, Jane worked for several different companies. She loved her last job at Wachovia. In her late 80’s Jane would say that she would still work there if the company hadn’t left Newark. She had many friends there.

Jane loved life. She loved music and dancing. Jane blasted 50’s and 60’s music at home most days. When Jane and John were younger, they were out with friends dancing most weekends. She loved the whole family of kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids in her pool having a good time. Jane was most happy outside in her backyard swing, sitting in the sun or gardening. Jane knew someone everywhere she went after living in Newark for 60 years.

In addition to her parents, Jane was preceded in death by her husband, John A. Thornton; brother, Joe Savin; and sisters, Marie Cooling and Doris Farlow. She is survived by her sister, Nancy Van Den Heuvel (Harry); children, Susan Fye (Dave) of Milton, John A. Thornton Jr. (Terry) of Newark, and Wendy Thornton (Tom Hall) of Middletown; five grandchildren, Laura Fye Havens, John S. Miller, Jessica Thornton, Virginia Thornton Woloszyn, and Shelby Thornton Bell; and six great-grandchildren.

A committal service will begin at 11 am on Wednesday, June 12, 2024, in the chapel of Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear, DE.

In lieu of flowers, donation may be made in Jane’s memory to the Arbor Day Foundation, 211 N. 12th Street, Lincoln, NE 68508 or online by clicking here.
