Janet M. Reed, age 90, of New Castle, DE, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family on Saturday, March 2, 2024.

Born in Wilmington, DE on June 16, 1933, she was a daughter of the late Robert J. and Anna (Ford) Maxwell. Janet was a graduate of Wilmington High School with the class of 1951. She made her career as a library aide at William Penn High School for 20 years until her retirement.

A woman of faith, Janet was a member of New Castle Presbyterian Church for 65 years, and was a member of the Deacon Women’s Association. In her spare time, she loved to play golf and was a member of the Delaware Women’s Golf Association, serving as a past Treasurer. Janet enjoyed traveling to new places as often as she could. Most of all, she cherished time spent with her family and close friends.

In addition to her parents, Janet was preceded in death by her brother, Robert A. Maxwell; and brother-in-law, Marvin Weaver. She is survived by her loving husband of 70 years, Earl J. Reed, Jr.; children, Jeffrey A. Reed, David E. Reed (Mollie), and Susan E. Werkheiser (Jim); sister, Lynda M. Weaver; sister-in-law, Helen M. Maxwell; brother-in-law, Gerald Reed (Becky); stepsisters, Jean Northwood and Shirley Preston; grandchildren, Brian Werkheiser (Lauren), Nicole Kowaleski (Ed), Sarah Christie (Will), and Brad Werkheiser (Sarah Ann); and great-grandchildren, Eddie Kowaleski, Brynnlee Kowaleski, Reed Kowaleski, and Sawyer Kowaleski.

A memorial service will begin at 2 pm on Saturday, March 16, 2024, at New Castle Presbyterian Church, 25 E. 2nd Street, New Castle, DE 19720. A reception will follow in New Castle Presbyterian Church’s CE Building. Inurnment will be held privately in Gracelawn Memorial Park at the convenience of the family.
