Jean Elmore (Williams) Meredith, age 93, of Newark, DE, passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 9, 2017.

Born in Newark, NJ on June 25, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Walter E. and Elsie (Hornbech) Williams. Jean graduated from Columbia High School in Maplewood, NJ in 1942 and then attended Washington College in Chestertown, MD from 1942 to 1944. On October 4, 1952, she married the love of her life, E. Thomas Meredith in South Orange, NJ. Together, they resided in Maplewood, NJ until moving to Delaware in October 1983.

Jean was a talented homemaker and devoted Boy Scout widow. A lifelong Episcopalian, she would often volunteer her time at St. George’s Episcopal Church in Maplewood, NJ and St. Nicholas Episcopal Church in Newark, DE. She enjoyed going out to lunch with her friends, reading, and watching her favorite shows, Wheel of Fortune, Jeopardy, and Dancing with the Stars.

In addition to her parents, Jean was preceded in death by her husband, E. Thomas Meredith; son, George T. Meredith; granddaughter, Marie E. Meredith; and step-mother, Marie (Eyler) Williams. She is survived by her son, Walter E. Meredith (Adele); grandchildren, Michael Meredith (Ashley) of Abingdon, MD, Crystal Schur (Johnathan) of Camden, DE, Kelsey Malafronti (B.J.) of Lansing, NC; and Wesley Meredith of Newark, DE; great-grandchildren, Danica and Cayden Malafronti; and daughter-in-law, Jennifer (Simpkins) Meredith.

A visitation for family and friends will be held from 7 pm until 9 pm on Thursday evening, December 14, 2017 at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 121 W. Park Place, Newark, DE. A second visitation will be held from 10 am until 11 am on Friday morning, December 15, 2017 at St. Nicholas Episcopal Church, 10 Old Newark Road, Newark, DE 19713, where a funeral service will be held at 11 am. Interment will follow in Gracelawn Memorial Park, 2220 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Jean’s memory may be made to St. Nicholas Episcopal Church at the address listed above.
