Jean S. Dunn

Mrs. Jean S. Dunn, age 91, of West Grove, PA, formerly of Dallam Road in Newark, DE, passed away on Wednesday, August 8, 2012.
Born in New York City on November 24, 1920, Jean was the daughter of the late Byron W. Shimp and Besse Good Shimp. She received her bachelor’s degree in English from Wells College and would serve as an academic advisor with the University of Delaware’s College of Arts and Sciences, where she retired after a 15-year career.
Committed to social justice throughout her life, Jean was instrumental in establishing Planned Parenthood of Delaware and would serve on its board of directors for many years. She was also a leader in the academic community as an active member of the American Association of University Women (AAUW).
With her beloved husband of 52 years, retired UD professor Albert H. Dunn III, Jean was a longtime member of the First Presbyterian Church of Newark.
Albert passed away in 1998. Jean is survived by her children, Ellen C. Dunn of Enfield, NH, Christopher W. Dunn of Seattle, WA, and Nancy D. Cosgrove and her husband Joseph of Ridgefield, CT; and grandchildren, Cameron and Conner Cosgrove, both of Ridgefield, CT, and Ellie Dunn of Seattle, WA.
A memorial service will be held at 11 am on Sunday, August 12, 2012, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 121 West Park Place, Newark.
