Mrs. Jennie T. Thornton, age 74, of Newark, DE, passed away on Saturday, August 27, 2011.

A native Delawarean, Mrs. Thornton was born in New Castle on May 27, 1937, daughter of the late Joseph Thomas and Elizabeth Yeamans Thomas. She was employed with the DuPont Company for 25 years, before retiring as a production coordinator. She later accepted a position with Agilent Technologies, where she also retired after several years.

Mrs. Thornton was a Lifetime Member of the Chesapeake City VFW Ladies Auxiliary and a past member of the New Castle Pythian Sisters. Well known by family and friends as a talented and gracious hostess, she delighted in having family gatherings and parties at her home. She also enjoyed reading and gardening in her leisure time.

She is survived by her beloved husband, Robert M. Thornton, Sr.; children, Robin Iler (Jerry) of Oxford, PA, Robert Thornton, Jr. (Christine) of Newark, and Dawn Thornton of Newark; siblings, Mary Cannon of New Castle, Richard Thomas of San Diego, CA, and Doris Ann Taylor of Rehoboth Beach; grandchildren, Brittany, Jennie, Nathan, and Chad; and great grandchildren, Chad and Anthony.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by siblings, Elizabeth T. Lewis and Herbert H., Joseph E., Thomas Y., and John J. Thomas.

A funeral service will be held at 10 am on Friday, September 2, 2011, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 121 West Park Place, Newark, where visitation will begin at 9 am. Interment will be in Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear.
