Joan F. (O’Neal) Read, age 89, of Newark, DE, passed away and went Home to her Lord on Thursday, July 8, 2021 with her children by her side.

Born in Wilmington, DE on July 6, 1932, she was employed as a secretary for Salem United Methodist Church for several years, but loved being a homemaker most of her life. She was very dedicated to her family and cherished the opportunity to be a mother. Joan was an avid reader who was very dedicated to her religious faith.

Joan is preceded in death by her husband, Elmer E. Read, Jr.; daughter, MaryBeth Huey; brother, James Bader; beloved aunt, Anne Brown; and her parents, Josephine Blawn and Paul O’Neal.  She is survived by her sons, Elmer “Butch” Read III (Elizabeth) and Franklin “Bud” Read (Dorinda); daughters, Linda Read and Donna Pleasanton; sister, Peggy Cook (Darwin); brother, Robert O’Neal (Maria), and son-in-law, Christopher Huey.  She is also survived by her treasured grandchildren, Stephen (Tara), Kyle, Frank, Gregory (Jackie), Christina (Marisa), Joshua, Melissa, Nathan, Jonathan; and 6 great-grandchildren.

A visitation for family and friends will be held from 11 am until 12 noon on Friday, July 23, 2021 at Salem United Methodist Church, 469 Salem Church Rd, Newark, DE, where a funeral service will be held at 12 noon. Interment will follow in the adjoining cemetery.
