Joan Marie Cox, age 93, of Wilmington, DE, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family on Wednesday, March 5, 2025.

Born in Wilmington, DE on August 20, 1931, she was the daughter of the late Christian Dewey and Mary Elizabeth (Dietrich) Patton. Joan grew up in the East side of Wilmington and attended New Castle High School. After high school she started her lifelong career with Diamond State Telephone Co. where she dedicated 48 years as a telephone operator and customer service administrator. Joan later worked at Emily Bissell Hospital as a receptionist.

In her spare time, Joan loved line dancing and going on trips with her dancing group. She and her husband, Elwood also enjoyed traveling together, especially cruising and going to Florida. Joan always looked forward to eating crabs and drinking beer with her family and friends. She was an avid NASCAR fan and lifelong Phillies fan who spent most games managing team from her recliner.

In addition to her parents, Joan was preceded in death by her husband, Elwood George Cox; daughter, Patricia Day; son-in-law, Ernie Day; son, Elwood “Woody” Cox; and grandson, Elwood “Woody” Cox III. She is survived by her daughter, Linda Hicks (Ron); daughter-in-law, Michelle Miller; 8 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 12 pm on Tuesday, March 11, 2025, at St. John the Beloved Parish, 907 Milltown Road, Wilmington, DE 19808. Inurnment will be held privately in Gracelawn Memorial Park.

  • Joan became a wonderful friend as I got to know her over the past several years. It saddens me greatly to know I will never see that smile again.
