Joanne R. Newton

Died May 8, 2023

Joanne R. Newton, age 67, of Newark, DE, passed away peacefully at home on Monday, May 8, 2023.

Miss Newton was born in Wilmington, DE, the daughter of the late James and Ruth Newton. She graduated from Christiana High School as well as Goldey-Beacom College, where she worked for several years before beginning her long career with DuPont Co.

Joanne took great joy in holidays with her large extended family. She always contributed her famous pea casserole and pound cake on her favorite holiday, Thanksgiving. A devoted aunt and daughter, Joanne was a much-loved caregiver to her mother for several years. There were many years of penny ante poker, trips to Wildwood, NJ, cookouts and fireworks with the Newtons and Connells. Joanne’s favorite memories were made with her cherished friends, Nancy and Judy, with whom she enjoyed old movie nights and lunches out. She also loved spending time with Barbara, who was more than a neighbor; she was a dear friend.

In addition to her parents, Joanne was preceded in death by her sister, Constance. She is survived by her brothers, Paul (Cheryl) of Jefferson, MD, and Steve (Susan) of New Castle; nephews and niece, Benjamin (Heather), Alexander, Daniel (Amanda), and Molly (Robbie); great-nephews, Gaius and William; and many cousins, including beloved cousins, Richard and Donna Connell.

A visitation for family and friends will be held from 10 am until 11 am on Friday, May 19, 2023, at Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 121 West Park Place, Newark, DE, where a memorial service will begin at 11 am. Inurnment will be private at the New London Presbyterian Cemetery.

Joanne’s dogs were her cherished children. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her name to Faithful Friends Animal Society, 12 Germay Drive, Wilmington, DE  19804 or online by clicking here.

  • My heartfelt sympathy to the Newton family. Joanne was my neighbor for many years and we got to know each other very well. We would often talk over the fence and share stories about our families and pets. Lucy, Tucker, and now Daisy were lovingly cared for by Joanne. I will miss my neighbor and dear friend. It will not be the same without her!

  • I was sorry to hear about Joanne, she was a volunteer for me in the office at Limestone Presbyterian Church. Such a sweet, competent person, she was a joy to have in the office. I was sad to see her leave, she was a great asset.
I am sorry she passed and will keep you and your family in prayer. Brenda K.
