John D. “Jack” Carey, Jr. - Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Homes & Crematory

John D. “Jack” Carey, Jr.

April 20, 1956 - August 1, 2024

John D. “Jack” Carey, Jr., age 68, of Elkton, MD, and formerly of New Castle, DE, sadly lost his battle with pancreatic cancer. Jack passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family on Thursday. August 1, 2024.

Born in Wilmington, DE, on April 20, 1956, he was a son of the late Katherine (Choronzy) and John D. Carey, Sr. Jack proudly served in the United States Navy as a submarine nuclear propulsion plant operator. He later completed a Bachelor of Science degree and Professional Engineering License, as well as an MBA. He made his career as an instrumentation and controls engineer at PSEG Nuclear for over 30 years until his retirement.

Jack enjoyed spending time with his family and dog, Beckett, at Bethany Beach as well as building his Cobra kit car and playing golf. He was a global traveler. He loved traveling to new places with his family and friends and tracking the US states that he had the opportunity to visit.  Like his own father, driving cross-country was never a burden and was actually relaxing to Jack.

Jack was an avid sports fan and knew all of the stats on any and all competitive sports, football being his favorite. While growing up Jack played soccer and was a midfielder, something he was particularly proud of. He was a huge supporter of women’s athletics, travelling to see the women’s World Cup and women’s NCAA basketball events. He coached all of his kids and grandkids in their own sporting endeavors and took every opportunity to lead, teach and be a role model for others.

Jack is survived by his loving wife of 29 years, Sandra J. Jannetty; children, Catherine Carey, David Carey (Janel), Jennifer Svehla (Michael), and MacKenzie Carey; brother, Frank Carey (Valerie); grandchildren, Brandon, Sam, David, Riley, Mason, Lucy, and Julia; great-grandsons, Logan and Ethan; and canine companion, Beckett.

A visitation for family and friends will be held from 10 am until 11 am on Wednesday, August 7, 2024, at Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 121 West Park Place, Newark, DE, where a funeral service will begin at 11 am. Interment will follow in Gracelawn Memorial Park, 2220 North DuPont Highway, New Castle, DE.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jack’s memory to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or online by clicking here.

30 Condolences for John D. “Jack” Carey, Jr.

  • I’m deeply saddened to see this news. Jack was so well respected at work because of his knowledge and leadership manner. If Jack had an opinion, his co-workers “took it to the bank”. We worked mostly in different areas in an environment of radical organizational and management changes in pursuit of improved performance at lower costs. Jack was a bright lantern of reason in tumultuous times. There was no nonsense in his toolbox.

My deep condolences to Sandy and the whole of Jack’s family. He will be proudly remembered as such a decent man.

  • Both Jack and Sandy worked for and with me in Salem I&C Design Engineering in the late 1980’s. With Felipe Pla and Bruce Rosenberg, they were an all-star engineering firm right in our group. Jack was especially key in the group with his background in Hope Creek I&C and took over the group when I returned to Salem Operations. Denise and I enjoyed many barbecues at their home in Elkton. So many great memories with Jack and Sandy over the decades. We offer Sandy, MacKenzie, and the rest of the family our prayers and support during this difficult time. Godspeed Jack! “Until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of his hand.”
