Mr. John Harvey Whitlock, Jr., known fondly as “Sock,” age 86, of New Castle, DE, passed away on Wednesday, September 14, 2011.
Born in Wilmington on July 7, 1925, John was the son of the late John H. Whitlock, Sr. and Hazel Sheats Whitlock. He proudly served his country in the US Army during World War II, and, in civilian life, made his career with the Coca-Cola bottling plant in Wilmington, where he retired as the manager after 36 years of service.
For many years, John looked forward to visiting his beach home in Long Neck, where he was an avid fisherman and boater. A sports enthusiast throughout his life, he enjoyed NASCAR, the Phillies, the Eagles, poker, and golf. He also enjoyed leisure time spent at the Delaware Park casino.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 59 years, Edith Giacomelli Whitlock in 2009, son, Phillip C. Whitlock in 2007, and a sister, Josephine George. He is survived by his son, Mark Steven Whitlock of New Castle; surrogate son, George McClelland of New Castle; brother, Reese Whitlock (Lily) of Long Neck; sister, Ellan Deputy (Buddy) of Bedford, PA; brother-in-law, Perri Castiglione of Hockessin; 10 nieces, 5 nephews, 18 great nieces, 11 great nephews, 11 great great nieces, and 13 great great nephews. He will also be greatly missed by his beloved dog, Ginger.
The family wishes to extend special thanks to the staff of Seasons Hospice for their caring and support during John’s illness.
Visitation will be held from 4 pm to 6 pm on Sunday, September 18, 2011, at Holy Spirit R.C. Church, 12 Winder Road, Garfield Park, New Castle. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 am on Monday, September 19, 2011, at the church. Interment will follow in St. Peter’s Cemetery, New Castle.
