John William Moore, Sr.

John William Moore, Sr., age 84, of Wilmington, DE, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family on Monday, November 20, 2023.

Born in Wilmington, DE on November 29, 1938, he was a son of the late Joseph A. and Marie (Quigley) Moore, Sr. John proudly served in the United States Army Reserves. He worked as an electrician for a family owned business until 1976, and then began his career with the City of New Castle until his retirement in 2004.

A friend to the community, John volunteered with the Wilmington Manor Fire Company, serving as the youngest president in 1964 at the age of 24. In his spare time, John enjoyed boating, fishing, and traveling to new places. Above all, he loved spending time with his family.

John was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Marie Moore, Sr. He is survived by his loving wife, Carolyn W. (Robinson) Moore; children, John Moore (Kathy), Robert Moore (Maria), and Susan Moore; siblings, Joseph Moore (Liz), and Joan Thompson (Bill); grandchildren, Joseph Moore IV, Kate Handy (Neal), Kate Bennett (Steve), and Brandon Hand; and 6 great-grandchildren.

The Moore family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at AccentCare Hospice for their exceptional care.

A visitation for family and friends will be held from 9:30 am until 10:30 am on Saturday, November 25, 2023, at Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 North DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE, where a funeral service will begin at 10:30 am. Interment will follow in Gracelawn Memorial Park, 2220 North DuPont Highway, New Castle, DE.

  • We were so very sorry to learn that John had passed away. John & Chubby each worked for a city and talked
    about similar problems when camping together. John, upstate DE and Chubby downstate DE. Yet
    the things they dealt with had many similarities. Whenever we saw John & Carolyn, as infrequent as it
    was, things remained the same for all of us. It was like yesterday that we had spoken, not months or in
    this case a few years later. He will be sorely missed and graciously remembered. God Bless you all.
