Jonathan Lesley Wood

April 6, 1945 - July 22, 2024

Jonathan Lesley Wood, age 79, of Newark, DE, passed away on Monday, July 22, 2024.

Born in Hartford, CT on April 6, 1945, he was a son of the late Roger G. and Muriel (Harmon) Wood.  Jonathan graduated from Dickinson High School in 1963.  After graduating he worked at DuPont Wilmington Shops from 1968 to 1970 and Hewlett Packard in the early 1970’s to 1986.  With a lot of hard work and determination, he then became the owner of a tool and die shop, T&C Grinding in 1986, where he became a master machinist, and retired in 2017.  He started work as a paper boy at age 12, worked various jobs throughout his life including concrete jobs and ended up doing more of those than anyone could count.  A man of many talents, Jon would DJ with his good friend, Dave Curtis (Fantasy); sang in the Delaware Chorale, in church and also for weddings; and wrote many skits for HP including a play called “Movin’ On Up”.  He loved to entertain and make people laugh.   Children especially enjoyed his quick wit and animated personality.  He loved being around children and they loved him right back.  He often listened to Brahms, his favorite composer and could recite countless poems from memory. Cooking the best meals ever was another of his passions. Going to auctions and collecting antiques became a favorite pastime after his retirement. Friends, neighbors and relatives always knew they could come to him for help. Jon married his high school sweetheart, Betsy, on his 72nd birthday in 2017.  Most of all, he loved his children and family.  We were lucky and blessed to have had him in our lives.

In addition to his parents, Jonathan is preceded in death by his brother, Douglas. He is survived by his loving wife, Betsy Wood; 3 children, Michelle A. Wood, Deborah S. Wood, and Heather E. Wood; 8 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; stepson, Frank C. Boyko (Jodi); stepdaughter, Dawn N. Eigner (Ken); 6 step-grandchildren; and his sister, Susan.

A visitation for family and friends will be held from 10 am until 11 am on Tuesday, August 20, 2024, at Ebenezer United Methodist Church, 525 Polly Drummond Hill Road, Newark, DE, where a memorial service will begin at 11 am. Interment will be held privately.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jonathan’s name to a charity that he was highly passionate about, Tunnels to Towers, 2361 Hylan Boulevard, Staten Island, NY 10306 or online by clicking here.
