Joseph A. “Joey” Guthrie

June 28, 1980 - April 21, 2025

Joseph A. Guthrie, affectionately known as Joey, passed away on Monday, April 21, 2025. He was born on June 28, 1980, and spent his entire life in Delaware. Joey grew up in New Castle and most recently moved to the beach, where he found his true paradise. He loved walking along the water, watching the beautiful sunrises and sunsets from the golf cart with Stephanie, and being surrounded by family and friends.

A devoted Miami Dolphins fan since childhood, Joey had a smile that could light up any room and a knack for making those around him laugh with his quirky remarks. His positive outlook on life was contagious, and he never missed a family gathering or an opportunity to spend time with loved ones. Joey’s deep love for the beach and the people closest to him was unmatched.

He is survived by his loving parents, Joseph F. Swientochowski and Karen Swientochowski, and by the love of his life, Stephanie Bendel, along with her three children, who meant the world to him.

Joey was preceded in death by his grandparents, Paul J. Diggins and Darla Diggins, and Joseph Francis Swientochowski and Sarah Agnes (Barilo) Swientochowski.

A visitation for family and friends will be held from 10 am until 11 am on Saturday, May 10, 2025, at Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 North DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE, where a celebration of Joey’s life will begin at 11 am. Family and friends are invited to join us in honoring his memory and the joy he brought to all of our lives.

  • This is what I’m going to say about Joey Stephanie is my cousin I was adopted at Birth so I got to meet everybody in the family so I went to a family Christmas and everybody was talking about my mom and I didn’t know her so I was getting a little emotional so I went outside to smoke and Joey came out he asked me if I was okay I told him yes but I really wasn’t and he knew that so I told him I said it was very hard when they were all talking about my mom and I didn’t know her so he told me when we go back inside if I see you getting a little clammy I will start talking about football and he did that and then he started changing the subject when they would talk about my mom and he got me right out of the situation because the adoption was very hard for me and then we started talking about recovery because Joey was also in the fellowship and so am I so we both had something in common but I wanted to thank him for that day because he got me through that day and that was the first time I met him and God put him in that room that day with me and he made something that was very difficult for me very easy I will never forget what he did for me that day love you brother rest in peace

  • Joey, we lost touch over the years, but it’s weird to think about the world without you in it. I’m sorry you fell into the New Castle trap. You can rest now, bud.
