Lois Marie Sturgis, age 93, of Middletown, DE, passed away on Tuesday, December 9, 2025.

Born in Wilmington, DE on July 28, 1932, she was a daughter of the late Thomas and Agnes (Willoughby) Painter. Lois was a graduate of Wilmington High School. She then married the love of her life, George Sturgis. Lois work downtown in Wilmington Trust Bank as a bookkeeper in accounting until she started her family. She took great pride in being a homemaker and raising her two sons.

In her early years, Lois grew up in the Rockford Park area, swimming in the Brandywine and going to the school dances. Her greatest joy in life was being with her family, especially her grandchildren. Lois always looked forward to her yearly trip with her family to Cape May, NJ.

In addition to her parents, Lois was preceded in death by her husband, George E. Sturgis; son, Mark A. Sturgis; daughter-in-law, Faye Sturgis; and brother, Thomas Painter. She is survived by her son, Micheal T. Sturgis (Tina); grandchildren, Amanda Creese (Bradley), Neil Sturgis (Kelsi), Kyle Sturgis (Erica), Bernard St. Amand (Emily) and Shawn St. Amand (Ana); great-grandchildren, Hayden Creese, Kailee Creese, Ellianna Sturgis, Mia Sturgis, Lawson Sturgis, Aubrie Sturgis, Lydia Sturgis, Cole St. Amand, and Violet St. Amand; and sisters, Joan Doherty, Joy Gamble (Ronald), and Connie White (Gene).

A visitation for family and friends will be held from 10 am until 11 am on Friday, December 19, 2025, at Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 North DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE, where a funeral service will begin at 11 am. Interment will follow in Gracelawn Memorial Park, 2220 North DuPont Highway, New Castle, DE.

  • I remember Mrs. Sturgis fondly. I only lived a few houses away…but whenever I had anything to sell through school…she was always the one I was sure would buy. She made a little girl very happy many many times.
