Margaret Joyce “Peg” Legutko
February 11, 1947 - April 7, 2026
Margaret Joyce Legutko, age 79, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, after a long struggle with Alzheimer’s disease, on Tuesday, April 7, 2026.
She was born on February 11, 1947, in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania, to the late Emrys W. Andrews and Jenny Frances (Spare) Andrews. She was one of eight children. She was predeceased by her siblings George Andrews (Sandy), Roberta Buzzerd, Frank Andrews (Nancy), Donald Andrews (Kathy), and Richard Andrews.
Margaret, affectionately known as “Peg,” grew up as a natural caretaker, helping to raise her two younger siblings, E. William Andrews and Marlene Seyler (Byron), and later caring for numerous nieces and nephews. She continued this nurturing role throughout her life with her children, Tamara Lyn Smith and Mark Legutko; her grandchildren, Marissa Smith, Cailey Smith, Justine Legutko, Xander Legutko, Shane Legutko, Aria Legutko, and Logan Legutko; and her great-grandchild, Brinson Legutko-Howell, all of whom she adored.
She met the love of her life, Sylvester “Syl” Legutko, her husband of more than 58 years, while attending Goldey-Beacom College in Wilmington, Delaware. After earning her secretarial certificate, she began her career at DuPont, where she worked until starting her family.
Margaret was a devoted member of Hope Lutheran Church for over 50 years. After raising her children, she returned to work as the church secretary and volunteered countless hours with the youth program, mentoring and caring for generations of young people through activities, trips, and lock-ins. She later returned to DuPont, where she built a long and successful career, ultimately serving as a purchasing manager overseeing consultants and later warehouse purchases.
Margaret had a deep love for travel and cherished time spent with family. She and Sylvester enjoyed many memorable trips, including visits to Ireland and Italy, a cruise along the Nile, and a journey through the Panama Canal. She especially loved traveling with extended family, creating lasting memories with siblings, children, and grandchildren. A devoted grandmother, she purchased a Disney Vacation Club membership so she could share the magic of Disney through her grandchildren’s eyes. They lovingly called her “Gami.”
Margaret also hosted many cherished family gatherings, including decades of Andrews-Williams reunions. Family was the center of her life, and her love and care touched generations.
A visitation for family and friends will be held from 9 am until 11 am on Friday, April 17, 2026, at Hope Lutheran Church, 230 Christiana Road, New Castle, DE 19720, where a funeral service will begin at 11 am. Interment will be held privately.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hope Lutheran Church, a place she called home for more than five decades, at the address listed above or online by clicking here.

Thank you for allowing me to care for such a special lady. I will treasure the many memories of laughter, our girl’s day out by going to the nail salon, having lunch, getting ice cream “down on the corner”, you attending church meetings with me and our drives through the park.
You had the best facial expression and I enjoyed it most when I could make you laugh or smile. You became more to me than being my patient, I considered you my friend. Rest in peace, lady. I will miss you dearly. Love, Sherri 💕

Peg was a good friend for many years. We did Cub Scouts together with our sons, Mark and John. She was a part of Sarah Circle and her lifetime commitment to making Hope Lutheran Church a better place will be remembered by all. She will be missed. May she truly find peace in her heavenly home with God.

Syl, please accept my deepest condolences. Even though it has been more than forty years, I still remember how influential the two of you were in my struggles in 1985 to establish myself as both a member of the church and of the adult world in general — us as softball teammates and having some common ground in working in banking, and Peg training me to take over for her as church treasurer four years later. I always admired the way the two of you balanced your work, family. and church volunteer lives. (Remember that you can always contact me on Facebook.)
