Maria Isabel Opio

Maria Isabel Opio, age 64, passed away on Tuesday, January 9, 2024, at her home in New Castle, Delaware.

Born in Toa Alta, Puerto Rico on October 12, 1959, she was the daughter of the late Anastacio Santiago and Aurelia Ortiz. Maria attended school in Puerto Rico before she moved to West Chester, Pennsylvania where she graduated from Henderson High School. Later in life, she and her family moved to New Castle, DE. Maria worked in the retail business at both K-Mart and Home Depot, where she ultimately retired.

Maria’s sons, grandchildren and great grandchildren were her world. She loved spoiling them and printing pictures of them to hang all around her home. Maria was thrilled for the arrival of her fifth grandchild due in June. She also enjoyed spending time with her family, cooking, dancing, and laughing (sometimes at your own expense). Maria never passed down a trip to the Famer’s Market or Black Friday shopping. She also enjoyed watching her soap operas and Spanish language TV. Maria was a great listener with a beautiful soul and a smile that was contagious. She could be stubborn at times and a force to be reckoned with but still a beam of light for all of us. Maria brought love and joy to all who had the privilege of knowing her.

In addition to her parents, Maria was preceded in death by her siblings, Isabel Santiago Ortiz, Tomas Santiago, Luis Santiago, and Pedro Santiago. She is survived by her partner, Rodolfo Bustos Castaneda; three children, Raul Opio, Jr. (Emily Opio), Jeremy Opio (Christine Opio) and Xavier Opio (Katrina Opio); four grandchildren, Shilah Watson, Logan Opio, Lincoln Opio, and Luca Opio; two great grandchildren, Jordan Jurado and Londyn Jurado; siblings, Iris “Lucy” Santiago Ortiz, Carmen Santiago Ortiz and Margarita Santiago Ortiz; and a host of nieces and nephews especially her niece, Evelyn Santiago, who served as her loving caregiver and confidant in the most private moments. The family expresses profound gratitude, love, and appreciation to Evelyn.

“Mom, there are no words to tell you what losing you has meant. But now, each day brings memories of happy years we spent. You’d want us all to smile again and that’s just what we do every time we reminisce with loving thoughts of you. You’re with us when each new day dawns and when we say goodnight our guardian angel here on earth and heaven’s shining light”

A visitation for family and friends will be held from 10 am until 11 am on Friday, January 19, 2024, at Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 North DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE, where a funeral service will begin at 11 am. Entombment will follow in Gracelawn Memorial Park, 2220 North DuPont Highway, New Castle, DE.

Maria Isabel Opio fallecio el 9 de enero del 2024, en su casa en New Castle, Delaware. Le sobreviven su companero Rodolfo Bustos Castaneda y sus tres hijos Raul Opio Jr, Xavier Opio, y Jeremy Opio.  Los servicios  conmemorativo se llevaran al cabo el Viernes, 19 de enero del 2024 en Mulliken Funeral Home, seguido con un servicio en Gracelawn Memorial Park localizado en New Castle.

Maria Isabel Opio nacio en Toa Alta Puerto Rico el 12 de octubre del 1959.  Hija de Anastacio Santiago y Aurelia Ortiz. Atendio la escuela en Puerto Rico antes de mudarse para West Chester donde se graduo de la escuela superior de Henderson.  Ella trabajo en K-Mart y Home Depot de donde se retiro. Le sobreviven su companero, Rodolfo Bustos Castaneda, sus hijos Raul Opio Jr (Emily Opio), Xavier Opio (Katrina Opio), Jeremy Opio (Christine Opio), nietos: Shilah Watson, Logan Opio, Lincoln Opio, Luca Opio, bisnietos: Jordan Jurado y Londyn Jurado.  Tambien es sobrevivida por Iris “Lucy” Santiago Ortiz, Carmen Santiago Ortiz y Margarita Ortiz, Sobrinos y sobrinas, especialmente Evelyn Santiago, quien fue quien la cuido y su confidente en sus momentos privados.  La familia expresa mucho agradecimiento y aprecia a Evelyn.

Maria fue precedida en la muerte por sus padres: Anastacio Santiago y Aurelia Ortiz, por su hermana, Isabel Santiago Oritz y sus hermanos, Tomas Santiago, Luis Santiago y Pedro Santiago.  Los hijos de Maria, sus nietos y bisnietos eran su mundo.  Le gustava tomar sus retratos y ponerlos en todas partes de sus casa.  Estaba emocionada por la llegada de su quinto nieto cual se espera en Junio.  Tambien le gustaba estar con su familia, cocinar, bailar, y reir (muchas veces de ella misma).  Nunca se negaba un paseo a la Farmer’s Market or ir de compras. Le gustaban sus novelas y los canales en Espanol de la television. Ella era una gran oyente con una alma hermosa y una sonrisa que era contagiosa.  A veces podía ser terca con una fuerza que uno tenia que tener en cuenta, pero siempre un rayo de luz para todos nosotros. Todos los que tuvieron el privilegio de conocerla compartieron de su amor y alegria.

“Madre, no hay palabras que puedan describir como tu perdida me hace sentir. Pero ahora, todo los dias traen una memoria alegre de los tiempos que pasamos juntos. Yo se que quieres vernos sonreir, y eso es lo que hacemos cuando pensamos en ti. Estas con nosotros al principio de cada dia y cuando compartimos las buenas noches eres nuestro angel guardian y nuestra luz brillante del cielo”.
