Marie A. Henry
August 8, 1926 - December 9, 2021
On Thursday, December 9, 2021, Marie A. Henry’s wish was granted and she joined the Heavenly family she missed so much.
Born in Nanty Glo, PA in 1926, she was a daughter of the late John and Mary (Kaschalk) Stretchko. Marie worked for American Gear in Chicago making airplane parts in WW2 and then returned home and worked as a telephone operator before her marriage to John Henry in 1948.
Marie loved her family and cats. She loved her great-grandchildren’s smiling faces. Marie was a former Sunday school teacher and a collection counter for Holy Angels Church. She bowled at Pleasant Hills Bowling Alley for many years until her poor health forced her to quit. Marie enjoyed gardening and planting flowers. She loved to sing and listen to music especially ABBA. Marie enjoyed watching Alice and Golden Girls.
In addition to her parents, Marie was preceded to Heaven by her son, Robert; husband, John; brothers, Sam and Jack Stretchko; and sister, Theresa Surdick. She is survived by her sisters, Carlotta Yelenosky and Pauline Mutchka; sisters-in-law, Audrey Wirfel and Patricia Stretchko; brothers-in-law, Joseph Surdick and James Henry; children, Thomas and Richard Henry and Christine Wirfel (James); grandchildren, James Wirfel (Theresa), Michelle Buss (Scott) and David Wirfel (Shannon); 5 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Marie’s family would like to extend many thanks to the staff at Paramount Senior Living – Newark, especially the nurses and aides in Memory Care for their help in caring for Mom in some of the most difficult days of her life. She appreciated all you did for her.
A visitation for family and friends will be held from 10 am until 11 am on Tuesday, January 4, 2022 at Holy Angels R.C. Church, 82 Possum Park Road, Newark, DE, where a Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 11 am. The family requests that face masks be worn by all in attendance, regardless of vaccination status. Interment will be held privately in Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery. If you are unable to attend the funeral services due to health concerns or personal preference, the family will be planning a reception for Spring of 2022 to honor Marie’s life and legacy.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Marie’s memory to The Sunday Breakfast Mission, P.O. Box 352, Wilmington, DE 19899, Angel Wings Kitty Sanctuary, 45 Parsons Road, Landenberg, PA 19350 or through PayPal by sending payment to [email protected], or to Holy Angels R.C. Church, 82 Possum Park Road, Newark, DE 19711.

I’m so sorry to hear of Marie’s passing. My heartfelt sympathy to your family. I bowled on a team in the Rainbow league with Marie in the 90s. She was always caring and thoughtful, and a very good listener. What a beautiful heart she had! I’ve thought of her frequently throughout all these years and a wish her a peaceful journey to be with the family she missed so much. Rest in peace Marie. You will never be forgotten.
