Mark Pobres Gracias

November 3, 1946 - April 7, 2023

It is with great sadness that we share the passing of Mark Pobres Gracias, age 76, of Newark, DE, on Friday, April 7, 2023.

Born in Goa, India on November 3, 1946, he was a son of the late Rosario and Jacqueline Gracias. He later moved to Uganda where he grew up and started working. It is there he met Irene DeSouza, fell in love, and got married. When things got bad in Uganda, Irene and Mark fled to the United States and ended up in Wilmington, DE. Mark worked for ALICO and later with Cigna as a Senior Business Analyst.

Mark was a loving husband to Irene for 51 years. He was a wonderful father to Kyle, Jacqueline and later Matt. Being the oldest of 9 siblings, he made it his duty to look after his brothers and sisters. Mark was a caring brother-in-law; he adored his nieces and nephews and most of all his grandnieces/nephews.

Family meant everything to Mark, but his friends were just as important. So many people considered Mark a dear friend and many have visited Irene and shared wonderful memories of him. Mark was always so hospitable and welcoming to everyone. “The more the merrier “was his saying. He always made sure there was enough food and drink for an entire army. Mark was always the life of the party. Drink in one hand or on the dance floor. He pulled anyone as a dance partner and loved to engage in conversation, even after they just met.

Due to his job, he travelled to multiple countries and eventually took his family with him. Travel was his joy. He wanted to see the world and learn about new cultures and history. Mark made some dear friends on his trips, and many continued to be in touch with him long after the trip.

Three weeks before his passing Mark took Irene, Jacqueline, Matt, and Kyle on a holiday to Panama. By all accounts he had a great time.

Mark had a passion for sports. While he loved basketball, football, and soccer, his biggest love was cricket. As a young man, he played Cricket very well. On most days you could catch him binge watching the Cricket Channel.

Mark loved to give people a great big hug. He had a warm smile and was always interested in listening to other people and finding out about their lives

A visitation for family and friends will be held from 10 am until 12 pm on Thursday, April 20, 2023, at Holy Family R.C. Church, 15 Gender Road, Newark, DE, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 12 pm. Interment will be held privately.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mark’s memory to NAMI (mental health), PO Box 49104, Baltimore, MD 21297 or online by clicking here or to UNICEF Children, 125 Maiden Lane, New York, NY 10038-4912 or online by clicking here.

A Message of Comfort for You

God, in his great mercy,

Knew when loved ones had to part,

Something special would be needed

To bring comfort to the heart.

So He gave us each a precious gift,

Not even time can fade,

Of reliving tender moments

Through the memories we’ve made.

It’s so difficult to understand

Why loss must come to be,

But thank God for precious moments

That live on in memory.

Of smiles exchanged and joys expressed,

Of ups and downs you shared,

Of times you laughed together,

And of all the ways you cared.

For when time has brought your comfort

Through it’s gentle, healing touch.

Your most precious gifts will be those thoughts

Of the one you loved so much.

We pray that Irene and Kyle and all of your family will find comfort in knowing that the joy of knowing him as our friend has remained with us through all of these years. • To Irene and the entire Gracias family, we are so sad and shocked of hearing of Mark’s passing. He was an amazing person in my youth when I met him through my Uncle Dan attending Flyers games in DC, he was so excited at ther games and I became more of a Flyers fan because of him.
The years went by and enjoyed every moment with the Gracias family becoming childhood friends with Jacquline and meeting Kyle after him being born. So many years went by since the Syracuse times with my Uncle and Aunt up there where Mark and Irene would sometimes visit, but Mark and Irene attended my mom’s 70th surprise birthday and we never missed a beat like we never had missed times. Unfortunately that was 10 years ago and never saw them since but his wonderful impression as a great man with us stays true!
Mark, we love you and pray for you up in heaven. Thank you from me of the great memories you gave me on those Flyers trips and get togethers.
    Our loving prayers,
    Chris & Toni Saccone

Mark was a truly genuine person and our recollection goes back to High School and then as part of the Horizon Cricket team in Kampala where he was our captain and leader. While he was a stylish batsman, most importantly his sensitivity to his team members was always much appreciated.

Whenever we met in recent times it was always a pleasure to converse with him and realize that all of his successes in life had not changed him a single iota.

May his Soul Rest in Eternal Peace

    With much love

    John & Gladys Noronha

news of a loving brother in law. In my thoughts and Prayers xxx

  • My deepest condolences to Irene and family.
We were neighbours in Kampala and schoolmates too. As a growing youngster in Kampala, I knew Mark’s dad Rosario and brothers well. Rosario worked as a outfitter/couturier who not only dressed the local community but tailored for the expats too in Uganda. Leafing through the Vogue catalogues in Lowis & Co’s lounge, the fashionistas then requested Mark’s dad to prepare outfits in the style of the pages. A wonderful and humble family as I remember them.
Mark along with his brothers and I used to play cricket in the yard behind the house as teenagers and he then went on to play at a far higher level.
Rest in Peace my dear fellow.

  • Sincere condolences to Irene and the family. May Mark’s soul RIP. in the arms of our Loving God

  • We were shocked and saddened on hearing the untimely death of our dear friend, Mark(Pobres), after being admitted into hospital with breathing difficulties after a recent family vacation

Mark was a genuinely nice guy, humble, caring, with a warm smile and who lived life to the fullest. Mark(Pobres) will sadly be missed by us and surely with those who knew him. I always remember Mark from our childhood days growing up in Kampala, Uganda when Mark’s love of cricket became evident with how he would organise a group of friends to play cricket in open parks in our neighbourhood.

  • My dearest Irene, Jacqueline, Kyle & Matt,
I was deeply saddened to hear about our dearest Mark. Have fond memories of the Gracias family meeting up with us in the Kenyan National parks and staying with the family occasionally in Nairobi. • Dearest Irene, Kyle, Jacqueline, and Matt,
The children, of course, will not know us, but you, Irene, and Mark, shine brightly in our fading memories of Kampala and the Norman Godinho School many, many years ago! We clearly remember Pobres, as we then knew him, walking to school all the way from Old Kampala, neat in his dress, neat in his demeanour, and very neat in his class and homework! A true gift to his teachers! We have managed to learn Mark’s life by reading all the wonderful messages on this condolence page from his family and friends, especially those we knew in Kampala, and concluded that only a good student could accomplish all that he did! Mark, thank you for bringing old friends together to wish you one fond farewell! We rejoice in the thought that now we have someone batting for us on the divine fields of Paradise!
To you, Irene, and the family, we pray that God blesses you all with comfort and strength, and replaces your tears with smiles from the jokes, the laughter, the tears, and the closeness you shared with Mark over the years!

  • His warm and welcoming smile, generous hospitality, teasing humour and above all his love of life and family will remain etched in our hearts. Will celebrate those memories today with a cold glass of beer. Dear Irene and family love from Downunder. Rebecca and Tony.

  • Dearest Irene and family,

  • Gracias Family, Our deepest condolences for your loss. What a life Mark has lived and his legacy will continue on with all the lives he’s touched. I met Mark through his son Kyle who quickly became part of our family when he moved to Cleveland. When we finally got the chance to meet Kyle’s parents it was abundantly clear where his warm hearted generosity, likeability, and passion for life came from. It was honor to have met such a man and his life is one we should all aspire to live.

  • Dear Irene, Kyle, Jacqueline and Matt,

Words can not express how sorry we are for your great loss – the passing of your beloved Mark, a devoted husband and a doting Dad….

May God’s healing presence surround the four of you and give you the courage and strength to journey on without Mark’s physical presence.

Meanwhile, know that Mark lives. He is risen. He was born to eternal life on April 7th. He also lives on in the hearts and memories of all those who had the pleasure of knowing and loving him.

Eternal rest grant unto Mark, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May his soul, and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen. ✝️
