Mary Alice (Lucas) Lutes

May 8, 1941 - May 27, 2023

Mary Alice (Lucas) Lutes, age 82, formerly of Newark, DE, passed away peacefully at Christiana Hospital surrounded by her family on Saturday, May 27, 2023.

Born in Wilmington, DE on May 8, 1941, she was the daughter of the late B. Franklin and Mary (Janda) Lucas. She attended P.S. DuPont High School in Wilmington and worked for Bank of Delaware before leaving to raise her five children she shared with her husband, Michael.

Mary was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and beloved friend. She took great joy in her family, especially her grandchildren. She dedicated herself to attending every football, baseball, basketball and soccer game, swim meet, school event and dance recital. She made every birthday and holiday special while keeping family traditions alive.

In addition to her parents, Mary is predeceased by her beloved husband of 54 years Michael L. Lutes, Sr. Mary is survived by her children, Cynthia Peden (Michael) of Hockessin, DE, Michael Lutes Jr. (Jennifer) of Hockessin, DE, David Lutes (Laure) of Wilmington, DE, Deborah Lutes of Bel Air, MD  and Mark Lutes (Melissa) of Newark DE; and 10 grandchildren, Sean Peden (Erin), Marleigh Peden, Madeline Lutes, Grant Lutes, Delaney Lutes, Benjamin Lutes, Gannon Lutes, Lucas Lutes, Peyton Lutes and Blake Lutes.

The family wishes to extend their sincere gratitude to AccentCare Hospice for the love and care provided.

A visitation for family and friends will be held from 10:30 am until 11:30 am on Thursday, June 15, 2023, at Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 121 West Park Place, Newark, DE, where a funeral service will begin at 11:30 am.  Interment will be held privately at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery.

  • Love and best wishes to the whole family. We are still recovering from a trip to Maryland in late May for a memorial service for our niece, Jennifer’s husband. We probably will not make the service in June but out thoughts and prayers will be with all of you.
