March 14, 1938 - June 4, 2024

Mary E. Macklem, age 86, of Wilmington, DE, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family on Tuesday, June 4, 2024.

Born in Georgetown, DE on March 14, 1938, she was a daughter of the late Harvey A. and Sadie (Rash) LeGates. Mary made her career with the State of Delaware. Mary worked at Family Court from 1958 – 1968. She returned to work in 1979 with the Division of Public Health as an administrative secretary until she retired in 1991.

After retiring, both Bob and Mary (as they were affectionately called) enjoyed traveling with family, friends and their Nur Shrine Family on many trips to Florida, North Carolina, Texas, Colorado, Pennsylvania, Georgia, Virginia and Nova Scotia. Deep in her faith, Mary was a dedicated member of Aldersgate U.M. Church. In her spare time, she enjoyed going to Sellers Senior Center, playing Wii Bowling, bingo, and shopping. Mary loved lending a helping hand to others as an active member of the Nur Shrine Ladies Auxiliary. More than anything, she cherished the memories she made with her family and friends.

In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Robert C. Macklem. She is survived by her daughter, Kelli L. Janowski (Ray); sisters, Dorothy Black and Dolores Blevins; and brother and sister-in-law’s: Ernie and Patti Bailey, Bill and Mary Jane Macklem, James and Carol McCloskey, Norma Verdensky and Joseph Blythe. Mary is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.

  • Kelli and Ray
Your mom was such special person in our lives. The kindness, the thoughtfulness, the friendship can never be replaced. As my brothers and I left home we knew our mother would be in safe hands with her wonderful neighbors. Be comforted knowing Mary is beside Bob again. Prayers as you grieve your loss. 🩷

  • Kelli and Ray, I drove by the old house yesterday and noticed it was for sale. I had no idea until now that your mother had passed. Ms. Mary was such a wonderful and loving woman to my son Chase and I. We had visited her last December and she was in great spirits. We send our deepest condolences to you both.
