Matthew R. Thomas, age 36, of North East, MD, passed away on Friday, September 18, 2026.
Born in Newark, DE on August 31, 1990, he was a son of Gwendolyn (Couden) Thomas and the late James M. Thomas. He graduated from North East High School in 2009. He was an Ironworker for Union 399. He was one of hardest working men you have ever met without a complaint. He loved helping others any chance he could. If you knew Matthew, anytime you asked him for help, you likely heard him say, more times than you can count, “Gotcha, Gotcha” or “Yes Sir”.
Those words will forever sound like him and bring a smile, a laugh, and a little piece of Matthew back to us.
Matthew lived a life marked by compassion, quiet strength, generous spirit and deep devotion to family and touched countless lives. He brought an unmatched gentleness and warmth to every room he entered. He was quiet, deeply kind, and always the first to offer a comforting word or a helping hand. He leaves behind a legacy of pure compassion and will be forever cherished. He enjoyed guns, golfing, riding, gaming, movies, adventure, fun and laughter. He was a person who never met a stranger and would give you the shirt off his back. He cared deeply for everyone. He loved Jesus, family and friends more than anything.
Matthew was preceded in death by his father, James M. Thomas; grandparents, Robert & Florisse (Coleman) Thomas, and Norman & Mildred (Lindell) Couden; and many aunts, uncles and relatives. He is survived by his mother, Gwendolyn Thomas; siblings, Tammy L. Wade (Brooks) of North East, MD, Michael A. Thomas (Cinda) of Elkton, MD, and Holly G. Temple (Dan) of Newark, DE; nephews, Jaxson and Carter; nieces, Baylie (Micah) Addyson, Hayden, Mayson, Brielle and Taylor; great niece, Josie; and aunts, uncles, cousins and more.
A visitation for family and friends will be held from 9 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, at Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 121 West Park Place, Newark, DE, where a funeral service will begin at 10:30 a.m. Interment will follow in All Saints Cemetery, 6001 Kirkwood Highway, Wilmington, DE.
