Norman W. Carroll - Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Homes & Crematory

Norman W. Carroll

Norman W. Carroll, age 88, of Wilmington, DE, passed away on Monday, April 13, 2026.

A Wilmington native, he was born at home in 1938 with his twin brother, William. He was the son of the late Norman and Pauline Carroll. Norman attended St. Patrick’s School and Brown Vocational High School (57’). He was a very proud U.S. Marine, having served in the Corp Reserves from 1957-1964 after training at Camp Lejeune. Norman worked for Young and Wiggins, International Harvester and Standard Distributing as a truck/diesel mechanic.

He volunteered at the Wilmington and Western Railroad with Jim Mayberry, his father-in-law; Lanny Gallant, his brother-in-law; and with his son, Jim. Norman was a model railroader, and matchbook and postcard collector along with many things and clippings he saved. He loved playing horseshoes and won a few medals with the Delaware Senior Olympics. Norman was always a country music fan, but not “the new stuff”. He was a proud left-hander and noticed everyone who was. The Pittsburgh Steelers were his team! Norman enjoyed many happy years with Holy Spirit’s Holy Name Society. With his wife, he enjoyed visits to De La Warr, Weston and New Castle Senior Centers in their later years. In February 2024, they made a home at Gilpin Hall surrounded by a caring staff and additions to their “family.”

Norman died of a broken heart, having lost his wife, Marie on Valentine’s Day after 66 years. He was also predeceased by his parents; daughter, Lisa Ann (1967); brothers, Francis and Ronald; sisters, Margaret Ellis, Pauline King, and Barbara Kemp; in-laws, James and Margaret Mayberry; and his twin, William, who died 6 months after birth.

He is survived by his children, Colleen Borgia (Joseph), James, Fr. Norm, Patrick (Stephen Powers) and Joseph (Erin); sister, Elizabeth Hastings (Doug); brother-in-law, John Mayberry (Mary Ann); sister-in-law, Patricia Gallant; 6 grandchildren: Lisa, Kelly and Joseph Borgia and Megan, Matthew and Finnigan Carroll; and many nieces and nephews.

A visitation for family and friends will be held from 4 pm until 7 pm on Friday, April 17, 2026, at Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 North DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 am on Saturday, April 18, 2026, at Holy Spirit Church, 12 Winder Road, New Castle, DE. Interment will follow in Cathedral Cemetery, 2400 Lancaster Avenue, Wilmington, DE.
