Orin Lee Black

February 13, 1943 - May 9, 2026

Orin Lee Black, age 83, of Elkton, MD, passed away in his sleep on Saturday, May 9, 2026, after a struggle with a brain tumor.

Born in Renton, Washington on February 13, 1943, he was the second son of the late Gerald and Zella Black. From his youngest years, Orin had a zest for life. He read “everything in the school library” while he was young and often told stories of his adventures with his siblings and many cousins there and in Nebraska. He graduated from the University of Washington with degree in finance that took him all around the country in the trucking industry, but the latter half of his career was spent at Mitsubishi Fuso, ultimately filling the role of CFO. He loved history, art, walks around the reservoir, musical performances, stock trading, and food of all kinds. Most of all, he loved his family and community.

Orin was a devoted husband to Marcia Black (Vedock) and a loving father to four children: Julia Singleton (husband Kentner and children Rachel and Henry) of Rockville, MD; Mary Black of Rockville, MD; Sarah Van Stan (husband Jarrad and children Blaise and Sonia) of Quincy, MA; and Lee Anne Haney (husband Scott and children Scarlett and Alina) of Millersville, MD. He loved his children and grandchildren beyond measure. He is predeceased by his older brother, Lynn Black, and his younger sister, Sharon Sabin, and is survived by his younger brother, veteran Lewis Black. He was close to all of his siblings and an involved and enthusiastic uncle to his many beloved nieces and nephews.

Orin was much loved by his family, church, local coffee shop group, and neighbors. He could talk to anyone and his generosity knew no bounds. He remained a constant source of unconditional love, comfort, and support to his children throughout his life and will be desperately missed.

A visitation for family and friends will be held from 11 am until 12 pm on Monday, May 18, 2026, at St. John the Baptist Church, 200 East Main Street, Newark, DE, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 12 pm. Inurnment will follow in All Saints Cemetery, 6001 Kirkwood Highway, Wilmington, DE.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in Orin’s memory to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or online by clicking here.

  • The first thing that comes to mind about Uncle Orin is just how easy it was to talk with him. I can remember having conversations with him when I was young. I cannot remember all the things we talked about, but we could go months or years between visits, and he was just the same Uncle Orin. Smiling, laughing, and having a true interest in his family. From my vantage point, he was not just a good uncle but a great father and husband. I definitely saw him as a role model, and I will miss him. • Dear family of Orin
I am so saddened to hear of Orin’s passing. Orin was a dear work colleague and friend. He hired
Me into the MFTA family over 28 yrs ago……I learned so much from him in regards to the trucking industry, dealer operations and corporate financing. He also had so many stories to share as well as a wonderful sense of
Humor! I am forever indebted to him for bringing me into the MFTA family.
    My Sincere Condolences ,

  • To Orin’s Family,
My first thought is to say what you already know—he was so proud of you! And loved you with all his heart. I worked with Orin everyday at MFTA, where he hired me, and got to experience firsthand his kindness, his humor, his vast knowledge, his compassion, and his interests. A group of us would go to lunch most days and try to solve the world’s problems. :) We have lost a gentle, kind soul. 💕
    With love and sadness,
