Patricia E. “Pat” Hunter
January 5, 1949 - June 25, 2026
Patricia E. “Pat” Hunter, age 77, of Townsend, DE, passed away peacefully in the company of her husband and daughter on Thursday, June 25, 2026.
Born in Upland, PA on January 5, 1949, she was a daughter of the late Ray and Marie Burke. Pat attended St. Agnes Elementary School and Bishop Shanahan High School in West Chester, PA, graduating in 1966. During the summers, she worked for Kelly Girls as a temporary secretary. Pat was offered many permanent positions but enjoyed the flexibility of being a temporary worker. She attended and graduated from West Chester State College in 1970 with a BS in Social Studies Education.
While attending West Chester State College, Pat met her husband, Michael in her first semester of her junior year. She and Michael got married on July 25, 1970. Pat continued to work for Kelly Girls after graduation, and later accompanied Michael to Ohio while he served in the U.S. Air Force. She worked as a temporary government service employee at the base where Michael was serving. Pat got a permanent job with Owens Corning in Newark, OH as an executive secretary, and worked there until her first child, Andrew was born in July of 1975. She then became a mother and home maker, welcoming her second child, Caroline in January of 1980.
The family lived in Columbus for ten years until March of 1985 when they relocated to Delaware. Pat became a substitute teacher for the Red Clay School District. She worked at Skyline and Stanton Middle Schools as well as Dickinson and McKane High Schools. However, she refused all Tuesday assignments because that was her day to go bowling. In fact, when she was finally convinced to fill a long-term assignment, it was agreed that they would get a substitute teacher for her on Tuesdays!
Pat joined the Coffeebreakers Women’s league and became president of the league in 1989. She served continually without a break in that office until her death, in addition to spending the last two years as secretary for the league. Pat also taught second grade CCD classes at St. John the Beloved Church in Milltown.
In addition to her parents, Pat was preceded in death by her sister, Jane; and brothers, Joseph and Ray. She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Michael; son, Andrew and his wife, Leigh; daughter, Caroline Alderman and her husband, Ryan; and grandchildren, Avery, Alex, Austin, and Samantha.
A visitation for family and friends will be held from 9 am until 10 am on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, at Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 275 East Main Street, Middletown, DE. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered 11 am, following the visitation, at St. Joseph Parish, 319 East Main Street, Middletown, DE. Interment will follow in St. Agnes Cemetery, 1050 Pottstown Pike, West Chester, PA.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Pat’s memory to the Brandywine Valley SPCA, 290 Churchmans Road, New Castle, DE 19720 or online by clicking here.
