Phyllis A. Sargent

Phyllis A. Sargent, age 87, of New Castle, DE, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family on Thursday, April 2, 2026.

Born in Virginia on September 13, 1938, she was a daughter of the late James A. and Myrtle M. (Dalton) Whisman, Sr. Phyllis dedicated her life to caring for her family as a homemaker.

Phyllis loved spending her free time playing Solitaire and crocheting. She could often be found sitting on her front porch relaxing. Phyllis always brought her family together at her house for holidays and special occasions. She was known to everyone that knew her as “Mom-mom.”

In addition to her parents, Phyllis was preceded in death by her husband, Carlton W. Sargent, Jr.; children, Michael McCray and Stephanie Carpenter; brother, Bobby Joe Whisman; and granddaughter, Nikki Carpenter. She is survived by her grandchildren, Mike O’Donald, Jimmy McCray (Jill), Shannon Armstrong, Rickey Carpenter (Ashley), and Crystal Edwards (Talo); great-grandchildren, Jordyn, Antonio, Kylee, Leah, Christopher, Thomas, Christopher, Mailiah, Brandon, Emma, Mackenzie, and Avery; brother, James Whisman (Barbara); and many nieces and nephews.

A visitation for family and friends will be held from 10 am until 11 am on Thursday, April 16, 2026, at Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 North DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE, where a memorial service will begin at 11 am. Inurnment will follow in Gracelawn Memorial Park, 2220 North DuPont Highway, New Castle, DE.
