Ricardo E. “Rick” Gayle - Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Homes & Crematory

Ricardo E. “Rick” Gayle

May 14, 1950 - September 17, 2026

Ricardo E. “Rick” Gayle, age 76, of Middletown, Delaware, passed away on Thursday, September 17, 2026.

Born in Jamaica on May 14, 1950, Rick was the son of the late Dudley and Hermine (Edgehill) Gayle. He built a distinguished career as a global change management leader, a profession that reflected his natural ability to guide, influence, and inspire others through times of transformation. He remained committed to that work until his retirement.

Rick approached life with curiosity, enthusiasm, and an unmistakable appreciation for the world around him. A culinary connoisseur, he loved preparing gourmet meals and sharing good food with the people he cared about most. He also enjoyed fine wine, with a particular appreciation for the vineyards and wines of Napa Valley, California.

The arts were another of Rick’s great passions. He delighted in theater, live music, museums, and art galleries, and he sought out cultural experiences wherever his travels took him. His natural wanderlust carried him around the world for both work and pleasure, and he embraced every opportunity to discover a new place, experience a different culture, and learn something new.

A lifelong athlete, Rick remained active throughout his life. In his later years, he especially treasured his daily outdoor cycling rides, often covering 16 miles at a time. His energy, discipline, and zest for life were evident in all that he did.

Above all else, however, Rick was a devoted family man. He shared 52 years of marriage with his beloved wife, Opal, and took tremendous pride in his daughter, Kimberly, and grandson, Blake. Though he was the father of one daughter, his influence reached far beyond his immediate family. Rick was a mentor, example, advisor, and steady presence to many. Through his generosity of spirit, wisdom, humor, and genuine interest in others, he made people feel valued and encouraged them to find their path and soar.

Rick lived fully and intentionally. He loved deeply, gave generously, remained endlessly curious, and brought passion to the people and experiences that mattered to him. His legacy will live on not only through his family, but through the many people whose lives were shaped, enriched, and inspired by knowing him.

In addition to his parents, Rick was preceded in death by his sister, Rose Seabrooks. He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Opal D. (Linton) Gayle; his daughter, Kimberly Gayle (Carlton); his grandson, Blake Williams; his brother, Carl Gayle (Pat); his brothers-in-law, Trevor Linton (Jackie), Earl Linton, and Derek Linton (Jennifer); and many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, and friends.

A visitation for family and friends will be held from 11:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 17, 2026, at Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 275 East Main Street, Middletown, DE, where a Celebration of Life will begin at 12:00 p.m. Inurnment will be held privately.

Flowers are appreciated, or donations may be made in Rick’s memory to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105, or online by clicking here.
