Richard C. Slater - Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Homes & Crematory

Richard C. Slater

Richard C. Slater of Middletown, DE, passed away peacefully at home on January 14, 2025.

Richard was born and raised in Miami, Florida to the late William and Jaye Slater.

Richard loved to play baseball at an early age especially when his uncles coached his teams. He was very proud to have played for the 1964 Miami Dade Junior College team that went on to win the national junior college championship that year. He also proudly served in the United States Army for 3 years. During that time he married and had two children, Richard Jr. and Wendy Slater. When his marriage ended in divorce he decided to move to Newark, DE to be closer to his family. It was there he enjoyed two years as an assistant golf professional at Newark Country Club and Louviers Country Club. It was also there where he met his wife Sharyn. He decided to go to school to drive tractor trailers and was immediately asked to be an instructor for the school after graduation. He was an instructor and then drove regionally for over 35 years. Richard and Sharyn welcomed a family with their two boys Andrew and David. Richard’s greatest joy was playing catch, coaching and watching his boys play football and baseball all through their school years. He continued to play golf for many years with his friends at DelCastle Golf Course. He will always be remembered for his love of his wife, children, daughter-in-law and darling grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Sharyn Slater, two sons, Andrew Slater (Bethany) of Newark, DE, David Slater of Newark DE and two granddaughters; he is also survived by his son Richard Jr. and daughter Wendy of Georgia, by his brother Ronald Slater of Mount Joy, PA, his sister in law Janis Melton (Roy) of Cochranville, PA and many nieces and nephews and dear friends. Richard was predeceased by his parents, William and Jaye Slater, his sister Rebecca and his nephew Matthew West.

A visitation for family and friends will be held from 10 am until 11 am on Monday, January 20, 2025, at Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 275 East Main Street, Middletown, DE, where a funeral service will begin at 11 am. A committal service will begin at 10 am on Thursday, January 30, 2025, in the chapel of Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear, DE.

In lieu of flowers, contributions to the American Lung Association, National Direct Response, P.O. Box 756, Osceola WI 54020-0756, or online by clicking here, would be greatly appreciated.

  • Dick was a great CDL instructor and helped Me change a few lives for the better. He became an unofficial father to me after my father passed away. He was a caring man with a gentle soul. There are people who walk through our lives and make them brighter and warmer. They are rare and in these modern times are surly endangered. In human history and in western civilization in particular really good men lay beneath monuments of granite with pomp and circumstance. Truly Great men however lay in little wisp of memory of how they changed our lives for the better. By this tried and true maxim Mr. Slater was a truly great man. We have the Lords eternal promise we will see each other again. May the Lord bless the friends and family of this humble and Truly Remarkable Man.
    – Till.
