Robert Francis “Rob” Spence, SR.
October 5, 1969 - September 10, 2023
Robert Francis “Rob” Spence, SR., age 53, of Smyrna, DE, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family on Sunday, September 10, 2023.
Born in Wilmington, DE on October 5, 1969, he was a son of the late George W.R. and Margaret Florence Spence. Rob proudly served in the United States Army as a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne. He spent his 30-year career as a truck driver with Sysco for 18 years, and most recently with McLane Co.
A man of faith, Rob was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church in New Castle. In his spare time, he enjoyed fishing, hunting, and listening to Metallica. Rob especially loved going to Nicola’s Pizza in Rehoboth, and his old blue Ford truck. He will always be remembered as a man who could befriend anyone and who deeply cherished his grandchildren. Rob was a man who built a family stronger than an army with morals and love that will forever shine on, through his family.
In addition to his parents, Rob was preceded in death by his son, Joshua Spence. He is survived by his loving wife of 31 years, Kelly Lynn (Johnstone) Spence of Smyrna; children Rob Spence (Kellie) of Clayton, David Spence (Heidi) of Clayton, and Kelsie Spence of Smyrna; grandchildren, Brycen, Gentry, Gannon, Alexis, and Shane; siblings, George “Bunky” Spence (Kim) of Claymont, Sarah “Bootsie” Doemling of Smyrna, and Alice “Cathy” Spence of Claymont; adored niece, Mallory Stevens of Newark; and a multitude of extended family and friends.
A visitation for family and friends will be held from 10 am until 11 am on Monday, September 18, 2023, at Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 275 East Main Street, Middletown, DE, where a funeral service will begin at 11 am. Interment will follow in Odd Fellows Cemetery, 420 S. Dupont Blvd, Smyrna, DE.
