Robert L. Schweitzer, age 63, born in Baltimore MD, died at his home in Newark, DE, on July 7, 2013. He was preceded in death by his mother, Regina, and his father, William, and is survived by his wife, Mary, son, Eric (Traci), daughter, Carolyn, and two grandchildren, Kendall and Connor. Dr. Schweitzer received his Ph.D. in Economics from Duke University, where he met and married his wife.
After graduating from Duke, Dr. Schweitzer worked as a senior financial economist at the U.S. Office of the Comptroller of the Currency. In 1980 he came to the University of Delaware, and has since held a joint appointment in the Department of Finance and the Department of Economics in the Lerner College of Business and Economics. Dr. Schweitzer supported the University community through his dedication to the students and student athletes of the University. From 1990 to 1997, Dr. Schweitzer served as the Finance department’s first chair, and received the college’s student choice teaching award in 2006. In 2007 he was awarded the Donald J. Puglisi Professor of Finance, a position he has held until his death.
Dr. Schweitzer published numerous journal articles in banking and financial regulation. He is nationally recognized as a top-notch educator in coast to coast banking executive programs, while his impact as a scholar on the banking, finance, and real estate industries is notable.
A lifelong devotee of sports, Dr. Schweitzer refereed college and high school lacrosse for over 40 years, as a member of the NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Official’s Association, and as chief assigner for high school men’s lacrosse in Delaware. He coached baseball and softball for his children’s teams, and was a dedicated supporter of University of Delaware athletics.
Visitation will be held from 4 pm to 7 pm on Thursday, July 11, 2013, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 121 W. Park Place, Newark, DE. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10:30 am on Friday, July 12, 2013, at St. Joseph on the Brandywine R.C. Church, 10 Old Church Road, Greenville, DE. Interment will follow in the adjoining parish cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions may be made to The Robert Schweitzer Scholarship Fund, The University of Delaware, 82 East Main Street, 3rd Floor, Newark, DE 19716.
