Roosevelt G. Mowete

Roosevelt G. Mowete, age 79, of Newark, DE, passed away on Friday, February 7, 2025.

Born in Lagos, Nigeria on October 10, 1945, he was the eldest son of the late Okondu and Beatrice (Azike) Mowete. Roosevelt was a graduate of Eko Boys High School in Lagos, Nigeria. He then earned his Bachelor’s degree from Fordham University, his Master’s degree from Baruch College, and finally his PhD from Columbia University. In the final portion of his career, Roosevelt worked as a professor at Medger Evers College of the City University of New York for over 25 years.

His employment history started with a Cost Accountant position at General Foods Company in Dover, DE from 1976 through 1978. Roosevelt then relocated back to his home country, Nigeria, with a job offer from Elf Aquitaine Oil Company as a Senior Accountant. Upon his return to the United States, he was employed at the Federal Reserve Bank, New York, as an Analyst, a job he held until finally settling at Medger Evers College in Brooklyn, NY. His accomplishments at Medgar Evers College include his leading role in securing accreditation for programs in the Business and Computer Science Department, granted by the regional accreditation commission.

Roosevelt loved sports and played soccer extensively in his younger days. He was also an avid tennis player. Roosevelt was a heavyweight in terms of his community-driven leadership and financial venture management in NACIFRA, Inc.

In addition to his parents, Roosevelt was preceded in death by his 2 brothers, Taiwo and Kehinde.  He is survived by his loving wife of 18 years, Margaret “Meg” Onochie Mowete; sons, Ijeoma Mowete, Nnamdi Mowete, and Nkem Mokedi; 2 grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, and many dear friends.

A visitation for family and friends will be held from 9 am until 11 am on Friday, March 7, 2025, at Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 121 West Park Place, Newark, DE. A Funeral Mass will be offered at 12 pm, following the visitation, at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton R.C. Church, 345 Bear Christiana Road, Bear, DE. Interment will follow in All Saints Cemetery, 6001 Kirkwood Highway, Wilmington, DE and funeral reception immediately after.

    As the Lighthouse guides and signals ships safely to the port, Dr. Chukwudi Mowete was in similar fashion a mentor to many, and many of us looked up to him, in awe of his high achievements in life.
