Sarah Ellen Viering

Sarah Ellen Viering, age 98, of Newark, DE, passed away on Tuesday, August 18, 2026.
Born in Wilmington, DE, on December 26, 1927, she was a daughter of the late Albert and Elizabeth (Dixon) Leager. Sarah dedicated her life to caring for her family as a homemaker.
A woman of faith, Sarah was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church. She was also a member of the TOPS Club and a lifetime member of the Delaware Saengerbund. Sarah loved to travel and especially enjoyed visiting Germany. She could often be found in her kitchen cooking a delicious meal for her family.
In addition to her parents, Sarah was preceded in death by her husband, Laurence W. Viering, Jr.; sister, Betty Potter; and brothers, James Leager and Sonny Leager. She is survived by her son, Kevin Eugene Viering; stepsons, Laurence Viering III and David Viering; 7 grandchildren; and 8 great-grandchildren.
All services will be held privately.

I am so saddened by this news. She was one of the kindest women I have ever known. I knew her through the Saengerbund. She was a dear friend of my Mom’s and an around the corner neighbor. I lost touch with her and messaged her son, David in Messenger, trying to find her. I’m sure he just never got the message. I would have loved to have seen her again. She was a busy bee, constantly flitting here and there, usually with a pie or some baked good in her hand. Sarah was a fabulous baker! This woman could bake a pie like no one else! She will be missed.
