Susan Anne “Sue” (Potten) Lumbert
August 3, 1946 - January 24, 2025
Susan Anne “Sue” (Potten) Lumbert, age 78, of Newark, Delaware, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 24, 2025.
She was born on August 3, 1946, in Queens, New York, to the late Katherine (Koenderman) and Eugene A. Potten. Sue graduated from Roxbury High School in 1964. In 1967, Sue met the love of her life, Delbert B. “Del” Lumbert Jr., during a family weekend at Millersville State University. They shared nearly 25 wonderful years of marriage until Del’s passing in 1993.
Sue dedicated 28 years to the New Castle County Vo-Tech School District as an Administrative Assistant, where she formed lasting friendships and took pride in her work. She retired in 2009.
Sue’s passions included cooking, baking, knitting, reading, and gardening. Her table was always filled with delicious meals like chicken and dumplings or prime rib—prepared with love and perfection. Her knitting brought warmth to countless babies and adults alike through blankets and afghans stitched with care. Each Mother’s Day weekend was spent selecting flowers to create a vibrant garden admired by all who passed by.
Sue was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Del; and her brothers, Eugene Potten and Fred Pisorchik Jr. She is survived by her three children: LeeAnne Thomas (Randall), Delbert B. Lumbert III (Brenda), and Jeri Turner (Curtis); three grandchildren: Rachel Grubb, Kyle Lumbert (Lea), and Madison Lumbert; six bonus grandchildren; nine bonus great-grandchildren; siblings, Dennis Potten (Rosellen), Cathy Patrie (David), and Linda Pilch (James); sisters-in-love, Gloria Lee, Georganne Pisorchik and Daleta Potten; and a host of nieces and nephews.
The family extends a heartfelt thank you to the staff at Churchman Village for their loving care over the past eight months and to AccentCare Hospice for their compassionate support during Sue’s final days.
All services will be private.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Sue’s memory to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 6704, Hagerstown, MD 21741 or online by clicking here; or a charity of your choice.

Sue was such a bright light for me at tough times when visiting my Mom (Mae ) at Churchmans. She was engaging , had a great sense of humor and I always looked forward to seeing her. You her dear family are in my prayers. She thought of and spoke of you often. It is nice to know she can now walk and go wherever she wants to go now….
