Suzanne M. “Sue” Steeves

Suzanne M. “Sue” Steeves, age 91, of Wilmington, DE, passed away on Wednesday, January 18, 2023.

In the year 1931 the average cost of a new house was $6500, gas was 10 cents per gallon and the average annual wage was $1650.  The Empire State Building was completed and the U.S. National Anthem became The Star-Spangled Banner and Suzanne Margaret St. John was born.

Born and raised in Rochester NY, she then attended and received a bachelor’s degree from Purdue University where she married her high school sweetheart, Earl Somers Steeves Jr.

After the children were grown and gone and they reached the golden years of retirement, they settled into their final home near Hammondsport, NY on Keuka Lake. They were married nearly 50 years when Earl passed away in 2004.

Sue made a career out of managing a household of 5 children and was deeply involved in church and community volunteer work during all of her adult life.

In addition to her parents, Sue was preceded in death by her brother, Al St. John; and son-in-law, Todd. She is survived by her children, Wendy S. Forrest, Roy A. Steeves (Rebekah), Wayne E. Steeves (Donna), Brett S. Steeves (Lori), and Kent T. Steeves (Amy); sister-in-law, Jacqueline St. John; and her loving grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and a growing cadre of great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 11 am on Saturday, March 18, 2023 at Hanover Presbyterian Church, 1801 North Jefferson Street, Wilmington, DE. A reception will follow in the fellowship hall of the church. Interment will be held privately.

  • I’ve never met a nicest women, from the moment I met Sue she always had a kind smile and a sweet “Hello” even if you were saying goodbye. She had a world of patience and kindness towards others. The world lost an angel when Sue passed. I will truly miss Sue. Until we meet again.

  • We have lost a truly magnificent lady who lived a life of service to her fellow man and her loving family. I will miss her sparkling personality and humor. God bless her and thank you for being able to know her these past 56 years.
