Valerie May “Val” George
October 9, 1942 - March 30, 2023
Valerie May “Val” George, age 80, of Newark, DE, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family on Thursday, March 30, 2023.
Born in Wilmington, DE, on October 9, 1942, she was a daughter of the late Martin and Esther (Hahn) Arters. Val grew up in Holloway Terrace, New Castle, and was one of four children. She spent her entire career working as a hairdresser and was a natural.
Val started doing hair for the senior citizens of Holloway Terrace when she was just 13 years old. She was a graduate of the class of 1960 at Brown Vocational Technical High School where she studied hairdressing. After graduation, Val worked in many salons around New Castle County, while raising a family. In her mid-years, she opened her own, successful business, VALS BEAUTY SALON, on Maryland Avenue. Val said many times, “If you treat your customers good, you will have many customers.” She also earned a professional license to teach hairdressing, which she used occasionally. Val retired and spent a year taking care of her mother and later her grandchildren, whom she took great pride in.
Dedicated to her faith, Val was a member of Holloway Terrace Baptist Church and later, Liberty Baptist Church. She was also a life member of the Holloway Terrace Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary, volunteering countless hours to others. Val and her husband loved to travel to Cancun, and enjoyed dancing and partying at the fire company. She was loved by all who knew her. Val loved her family with all of her heart, and will be sadly missed.
She is survived by her husband of 37 years, William George; daughters, Valerie Armstrong (Jim) of Lincoln University, PA, and Tracey Fahey of New Castle; siblings, Florence Williams (Jim) of New Castle, Martin Arters (Charlotte) of Bear, and Brian Arters of New Castle; stepsons, Mark George of Smyrna, Matthew George (Kim) of Middletown, Michael George (Tracey) of Middletown, and William George (Jen) of Townsend; grandchildren, Scott, Chloe, Haley, and Dalton; step-grandchildren, Liam, Amber, Taylor Lynn, Maggie, Karli, and twins, William and Ryan; step-great-grandson, Aden; many nieces and nephews; and feline companions, Peanut and O.J.
A visitation for family and friends will be held from 10 am until 11 am on Monday, April 17, 2023, at Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 North DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE, where a memorial service will begin at 11 am. Interment will be held privately.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Val’s memory to the Holloway Terrace Fire Company, 700 West Ave, New Castle, DE 19720.

Chloe,
Please know you and your family have been in my thoughts and prayers since I’ve learned about the passing of your grandmother. I know this is hard to process right now but I’m praying for better days ahead for you and your family. Your grandmother looked like she lit up the room with her presence and she will be missed by all who knew her.
Sending prayers of peace and comfort.
