Mrs. Viola E. Palo, age 87, of Newark, DE, passed away on Friday, August 26, 2011, at Christiana Hospital.

Born in Girard, OH, on February 8, 1924, Mrs. Palo was the daughter of the late John Pollari and Fanny Tuuri Pollari. She was a graduate of the University of Delaware and would go on to make her career as a chemist with the former Hercules Corporation, where she retired from the patent department in 1986 after 24 years of service. Following her retirement, she continued to assist in the management of the family’s farm on Dixie Line Road in Newark.

Active in her community, Mrs. Palo was a charter member of both St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and the Delaware Valley Finnish Americans. She was a talented musician as well and often played the accordian for a variety of events and socials at the Delaware Saengerbund and Library Association, where she was a longtime member.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 41 years, Tauno K. Palo, in 1990, and by her sister, Vivian Davis. She is survived by her children, Roy J. Palo (Barbara), Shirley P. Morton (Don), and Carolyn E. Palo (Kathy Goldstone), all of Newark; brothers, Wayne J. Pollari of Wilmington and William I. Pollari of Maine; and grandchildren, Rachel Morton and Bill Morton.

A funeral service will be held at 8 pm on Thursday, September 1, 2011, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 121 West Park Place, Newark, where visitation will begin at 6 pm. Interment will be held privately.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 701 S. College Avenue, Newark, DE 19713.
